Press Release from Datuk Seri Wan Azizah, PKR President

KENYATAAN MEDIA
UNTUK EDARAN SEGERA

Tarikh: 29hb Oktober 2009

MEDIA STATEMENT
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Date: October 29, 2009

Recent changes to the leadership in KeADILan have caused confusion and consternation among some.  I recognise that not everyone will be pleased with decisions made by the party’s leadership and not everyone will appreciate the difficulty we face in seeking to accommodate all views, including those of the divisions and branches which make up the backbone of the party, while striving to guide our party towards achieving its goals.

As our party grows in number and transforms into a national organization we have struggled at times to identify right strategy and mix of leadership that will carry us to the next level. Along the way we have encountered great challenges and have also uncovered promising new talent. Our task remains a work in progress and the announcements made this week are based on consensus and consultation within the party to work towards a better future.

KeADILan was established with a mission to be a unifying force for Malaysians of all races and religions and restore the integrity of the principles enshrined in the Federal Constitution.  This mission carries unprecedented import and its pursuit confronts us with unparalled challenges.

Over the years many have poured scorn on our aspirations for a brighter future and have derided our belief in an end to racial politics and rampant corruption.  And yet we, with our partners in the Pakatan Rakyat, made historic progress towards restoring democracy, freedom and the Rule of Law. We have done so despite a hostile media and the relentless attacks on us by the institutions of the government and the unlimited resources of the UMNO-led BN coalition.

I acknowledge the setbacks that we have faced since the March elections.  Political parties are complex organisms and political coalitions are neither crystallised overnight nor even in a fortnight.  The frustrations which have been expressed by some colleagues within the party and by some supporters are valid and I remain open to engaging all parties on the principle of mutual respect, understanding and an unrelenting commitment to the principles of justice and fairness.

The future of the nation does not lie in the hands of any one individual nor does our party nor does this coalition. I continue to ask the ongoing faith and patience of the people in supporting the mission of KEADILan and of Pakatan Rakyat.

  1. “Port Klang state assemblyperson Badrul Hisham Abdullah today said that he is quitting PKR with immediate effect to become a BN-friendly Independent”

One more casualty of the in-fighting. When will it end?? This is dead serious! What the hell is happening??

  2. PKR does not have the luxury of learning to walk as a toddler. Such a long term view and the elitist approach advocated by Wan Azizah can only grow roots in the classroom.

  3. Wan Azizah,

It is time to eat the humble pie, admit error, “reject” Jeffry resignation, and grant him his rightful position as Sabah PKR leader. Such a new stand, albeit an about face, shows a new type of federal leadership which respects the right of individual states. Once PKR shows her respect for the 21 Points Agreement, even at the expense of humiliating PKR own top leaders, will once and for all win over the heart of Sabahans. The road to Putrajaya might just be in front of us.

What is humiliation, if one just stomaches the feeling it.

  4. No can do Shiou. The die is cast. Changing minds at this stage can only lead to anarchy as others seek to do the same. Time for backdoor negotiations.

  5. Many Sabahans like to perceive the main duality is between the Semenanjung and East Malaysia, not between BN and PR. Many Sabahans would like to see Semenanjung got humiliated and punished for violating them (not executing the 21 Points Agreement and plundering their natural resources).

PKR can depart from BN shadow only by doing something different – by accepting the humiliation. Only then Sabahans can see PKR is different.

  6. Dear Kak Wan, political entities who are complex organisms and political coalitions can’t crystallize overnight?
Theoretically and clinically organisms do not ‘crystallize’ though they may hibernate. The only form of replication without the DNA/RNA is by ‘prions’ which cause mad-cow disease and kuru.
I sincerely hope, you inadvertently used this phrase – otherwise i have no choice but come to the conclusion that you know something that we are not privy to. The slow dementia of irrelevance.

  7. Guys,

Try not to be too hard on us in PKR and overlook the obvious corruption, mismanagement of public finance, and abuse of power of the hegemonic UMNO. We will find the right formula soon as the quality of our leaders is improving.

It is true that we have weaknesses and Wan Azizah knows that well, but the important thing is that we are always taking steps to be better at serving the rakyat. I told Haris Ibrahim that our position on this has not changed. We are with him on the question of Anak Malaysia and his People’s Declaration.

Our Ketuanan Rakyat is not a mere slogan. Grassroots democracy means power of the people and they can decide our relevance or not. Some of our people forgot this and they have let us down. Slowly but surely they are being isolated and put under pressure to perform (e.g. Badrul Hisham).

With regard to Jeffery, I think he must decide what he wants and be realistic in his demands. I have no doubt that given his intelligence and experience, he knows where PKR stands on some of the issues he raised in his Tambunan Declaration and on the 20 Point Agreement. We are for justice, not for Sabahans alone but for all Malaysians. My personal view is that he should remain with us and be on the right side of history. We have only just begun. White roses and promises ahead for a united Malaysia. That is my belief.—Din Merican

  8. Good riddance to flurs like Bad-rul, and his incipient bumno hubris of entitlement. These people do not ‘serve’, they only take.

However, i do find statements from YB’s like Wangsu Maju MP Wee CK to the msm, ‘unhelpful’ and quite demeaning – coming after Kak Wan’s statement. So are Azmin’s comments, about Jeffrrey’s so called recalcitrance in giving way to new blood – not understanding that in Sabah, the elders are given great respect, even if they are wayward.

There is too much rankling of little daggers/keris and airing of self inflicted wounds/grouses by these so called leaders. I wonder whether there is any substantive ‘political maturity’ amongst them. In times like these, they should be the one’s to tamp down the rhetoric and go forward silently without the big stick. Let us be the barker’s and the beserkers, so they can understand the feeling on the ground.
    ____________
Menyalak-er, we have mavericks and strong egos in our party; that is both our strength and our weakness, but all that makes our politics interesting and challenging. At the end of the day, Anwar Ibrahim has the final say. He is in charge and can re-focus PKR. Wait and see…things are brewing, that much I can tell you.–Din Merican

p.s. I am sure if “apologist” best describes my role. What I try to do is to explain to and engage all of you in an exchange of ideas and views. There is nothing to apologise, but there is plenty to explain and communicate. I try hard to communicate PKR’s agenda, policies and programmes.

  9. Salmiah,

I deliberately posted the 20 Point Agreement for debate. That is means I am open to comments.

Poverty is a serious problem in resource rich Sabah. But revenues from timber, for example, have been used by UMN0-BN politicos in the state itself for self enrichment. It is time we manage what is left in a transparent and accountable manner for the benefit of Sabahans.

Yes, we think Sabah must be run by qualified and honest Sabahans and hopefully through our struggle, new leaders who subscribe to good governance will emerge and lead the state. No more party hoping for personal or tactical gains should be allowed as the struggle for justice overrides personal and sectarian interests.

We can accommodate but not on fundamental principles which are accepted by Pakatan Rakyat (PKR, PAS and DAP). I am not an ahli “bodek”. That word is not in my dictionary. Otherwise, it would have been easy for me to one of them (UMNO crony).

After all, Dr. Mahathir is a friend of my family. I could have easily been an UMNO crony. What I got and lost are of my own making. In private, I expressed my concerns and dissatisfaction to my PKR leaders. But I will not wash “dirty linen” in public.

I have lived long to know what is possible for our country. I grew up during the colonial era and have been under 6 Prime Ministers since 1957. Maybe for people like you what I do is spinning and bodek. I do not think that way at all.

At 70 years old, I am interested in making my final contribution to my country and my less fortunate brothers and sisters. I love my country and it pains me to see what has become of our country after 52 years under UMNO hegemonic rule. If you can live with it, that is your choice.—Din Merican

  10. Dear salmiah, i don’t think Din can ever be a bodeker and although he is an apologist for PKR. His experience and professionalism does not allow him to have any political ambitions. He is who he is, and he is not PKR per se.

We can rest assured that he will bring this up to the cc in his own diplomatic way, as he is well aware of the consequences.

True, Anwar was a little demon, way back, before he was incarcerated. But even then some of us could see a gradual change coming in his attitude. The Malaysian Chinese too considered him an ‘ultra’, scheming and conniving like any typical cynical bumno ‘extremist’. He was timed out, and had cool his heels for those lonely years where he learned humility and reflected on his purpose in the greater scheme of things.

My ‘faith’ in him although tenous at the best of times, will never completely disappear, as i know he will do the right thing – if he is not surrounded by his sycophants.

  11. menyalaker ,

terima kasih . forgive me if i am too harsh , but i am just being as harsh as i can to make and impress the issues as i see it . my target audience is not just you or bean or tean or DIN . it is more then that and i am sure you are aware of this.

as for din , i know he knows that i am using this forum to reach beyond him. there is nothing personal here – and he should know this. i have always had faith in ” reason ” as the mother of all victories in discussions and debates. but here i am not seeking to win.

i am only using ” reason ” as the modus operandi to convince DJ DINS’ followers who are interested in this debate.
    ________
I appreciate your participation here. You are welcome to reach beyond me and others to a wider audience. All the more, you must be thoughtful and rational.—Din Merican

  12. PKR is basically made up of former UMNO members. Take care when you select or elect leaders. The party is muddling along the middle.Good leader bad organisation the organisation will become good. Bad leader good organisation the organisation will become bad.Good Luck

  13. A lame press release which simply shows the incoherent response to problems real or perceived, sadly. where is the decisiveness , the oomph as becoming of people who can lead , as against knee jerk reactionaries ?
Why so laggard an approach to problem solving ? No ideas ?
    too many self interests ?

so unbecoming of a “new force”, so full of promise , so devoid of substance !

  14. I think Tunku rushed it a bit when he agreed to the 20-point agreement which acts as a declaration of independence of sorts. Time was running out. The Brits were pushing it a bit.

An asymmetric structure of the federation was forced by circumstances. The friction that we see today in my opinion is inevitable as there was no real, meaningful consensus that could last. The agreement or agreements Kuala Lumpur made with them was not honored. Had Tunku continued being Prime Minister instead of Tun Razak it is anybody’s guess if and how things could have been different.

A narrow form of Malay nationalism had taken roots in peninsular Malaysia post-1969.

  15. Whatever it is from now, PKR should select members of integrity. In fact that guy should not only resign from PKR but also his MP post and call for a by-election. Dare he do it? This guy is shameless. The EC should look into this matter and since this guy is no longer a PKR member he has no right to represent that constituent.

  16. Aiya Din, not that kind of ‘apologist’ – an apologist in Greek terminology, is always seen as a defender of the ‘faith’ e.g. Christian/Muslim apologists – this does does not imply “saying sorry”! They are the goal keepers and without them nothing works.

What is faith? To have hope in things that we cannot see. If that is the case, most of who are here including dear salmiah, are defenders and apologists – but you are the key defender… Sometimes we inflict own goals, so we must learn from mistakes.

Despite all the brickbats that PKR receives (and sometimes deserve), it is our only hope and therefore that’s where we place our faith..

  17. It is a betrayal of the trust the constituents put on their representatives.

A resignation from party membership should result in a by-election so the constituents could decide who to best represent them. Constituents choose their candidate based on party affiliations. It is only fair that recourse be made to them. It would be different had the candidate stood as an Independent candidate and won.

  18. Menyalak-er,

Salmiah is interested in collecting foreskins as much as the headhunters are interested in collecting human skulls so they could shrink them to hang around their necks.

  19. I appreciate your (Salmiah) participation here. You are welcome to reach beyond me and others to a wider audience. All the more, you must be thoughtful and rational.—Din Merican

I’d be very careful if I were you. You know what they say about the Gurkhas and their ‘kukri’. Bits of your masculine anatomy could end up in preservatives in her jar.

  20. For Malaysia, the ongoing splintering within PKR is a blessing in disguise for it shows that they not only have the wrong partners in the coalition but, as is now becoming evident, are dangerously short of the kind of leadership the country requires. People’s anger with years of BN misrule gave PR a number of seats which surprised everyone – not to mention three of the most prosperous states. That, for the moment is all PR can handle. Running the country…? Forget it.

There simply has to be an alternative political group as a counter to single-party domination. But I just cannot see this happening any time soon.

  21. Bean, collecting foreskins was a bad habit of King David >3,000yrs ago – instead of collecting 100 Philistine foreskins, he collected 200 and thus was overqualified to marry King Saul’s daughter.
I can assure you that there was definitely head-hunting by this flur – as it would be near impossible to excise the foreskin without any killing.

Salmiah, Bean was just ‘jousting’. Your reasoned debate is well appreciated and you have what it takes to re-circumcise Bean – but my eyes are still ringing.

  22. Menyalak-er,

Since you are an apprentice to Tok Mudin (according to Salmiah, Din Merican is the current acting Tok Mudin) I am curious to know if they circumcise Muslim women in East Malaysia. Opponents of female circumcision call it ‘female genital mutilation’ or FGM in the language of the United Nations.

I would like to offer my services as immigration attorney in case these women plan to seek asylum here. Yes, FGM is a ground for asylum in all countries signatories to the 1954 Convention on Refugees as expanded by the 1967 Protocol. Malaysia is not a signatory to that agreement for obvious reasons.

  23. Umm… Bean, they don’t FGM’s over there, they just do the ‘nip and tuck’ on the necessary appendage…
Why in hell, am i telling you this?!? You want to start a Bay of Pigs incident in Sabah?

  24. so our tok mudin has banned salmiah hassan from participating here i see .

  25. Where is Anwar Ibrahim now? Shouldn’t he be here, in Malaysia, to clean up the mess faced by PKR at this momment. What is so important for him to be in Dubai or Cairo that the crisis of PKR was relegated to just a second fiddle – a trifle issue- and leave it to his poor wife to steer the party through this difficult time. Is it another of those useless speech about world economy or Islam sejagat which nobody give a damn about. ” Si luncai terjun dengan labu-labunya – biarkan, biarkan…” but please be back by this 3rd. Nov. -there’s some unfinished buisiness to be attended to!!!!!!!!!!!!

  26. Menyalak-er,

Nip and tuck?? Just how do you do a nip and tuck on something as big or as small as my name?? And how would you know?

  27. That is the only part of the female human anatomy that exists only for one purpose and for no other – sexual stimulation and you want to deny our sisters of it?? How cruel could you be??

No wonder Salmiah Hassan is on a vendetta.

  28. “Where is Anwar Ibrahim now? Shouldn’t he be here, in Malaysia, to clean up the mess faced by PKR at this momment. What is so important for him to be in Dubai or Cairo that the crisis of PKR was relegated to just a second fiddle – a trifle issue- and leave it to his poor wife to steer the party through this difficult time.” hotman

The government machinery is crushing down on Anwar through the Sodomy Case. Nor can we expect Malaysia public come to rescue and uphold the justice. The only remaining viable counter-balance force to Malaysia state machinery is international pressure. The only reason Anwar has not gone to jail is international pressure, not because Malaysia public opinion or pressure. Malaysia public did not believe the government case but the Malaysia public could not exert enough pressure to ensure justice is served. If Anwar goes to jail, there will be a big setback to PR and PKR. Of course, messing up Sabah PKR is also delibitating to PKR. Can he handle both?

  29. Bean, the nip is on da hood, compende?
How did i know? ‘Cuz i’ve seen it and marvelled at its ‘simplicity’. It’s not the gross removal akin to FMG. That is why all this ‘hyperexcitability’ occurs, the opposite of what you are implying…

    Shiou: “Can he handle both?”
I was tempted to say that: ‘We shall cross the bridge, when we come to it.” But thinking at that horrific collapsing bridge that killed 3 schoolgirls, 3days ago, i would be hesitant. I’d rather he do a ‘Wajayamoorthy’ – but Anwar is Anwar. He will be back.

And what’s the big deal about Nov 3, now Nov 6? I seriously thought all mainline religions have taught that ‘prophesying’ is taboo? Perhaps a lot of ‘heretics’ running around…

  30. I think it is time the world community of nations bring Malaysia screaming and kicking into the 21st Century. Over here we sodomize each other on a nightly basis.

  31. Bean, you keep the sodom part of it. We are perfectly happy being Gomorrah, er… gum-more-ah.

  32. Good Lord!

Hits on Din Merican’s Blog shoot up sky high everytime we take our coffee breaks to talk on issues like foreskins, tok mudin and female genital mutilation (FGM), Maria Ozawa, Sharizat and Cooper S.

Maybe our DJ Blogger should change format. :)

In no time it will peak 5 million hits.

  33. Everytime personalities like Salmiah and Catherine enter through the door, there’s a frenzy. A certain electricity absent otherwise. Tean would appear, followed by Menyalak-er and Tok Cik.

Tean would be talking about his open positions, exposures and spreads i.e. terminology not unfamiliar with currency traders, mini-Soros in the making. Tok Cik being an officer and a gentleman would be discussing redeployment at the back seat of his ageing Cooper S with Sharizat at the receiving end. It could be messy.

Then Din Merican would come from behind, and being the spoilt sport that he is, he deletes everything! Menyalak-er? Nobody can be sure what’s he barking at. Shrek has gone home to roost.

It used to be pomelos and buns. Now it has gone up one notch. Today the hot issue is politics of the foreskin. Salmiah Hassan has that as her doctoral thesis which earned her a medical degree instead of an honorary PhD.

  34. Catherine? She is busy watching the monkey doing the goat and learning about the birds and the bees.

How’s that for Saturday Night Life? You guys think I can get a job there? There are millions unemployed. Yours truly included.

  35. ” spoil sport that he is ” – bean

  36. ” but my eyes is still ringing ” – menyalaker

    menyalaker ,

    pakailah cermin mata gelap !!!

  37. Aaah … there you go. Thanks, Singh. Should be spoilsport – one word.

And Salmiah, apa pasai nak pakai cermin mata gelap pulak?? You always come screaming with CAPS! Next time just ask Menyalak-er for free prophylactics.

  38. bean ,

are we back to the goats and the bees ? that is my expert area .. not salmiah’s .. hers is foreskins. as for singh .. u can figure it out . he claims to be ” king “.

  39. wonder what bakri musa thinks about PKR’S sabah boo boo. RAJ PETRA KAMARUDDIN has said his piece . wonder when dr bakri will say his ?

  40. Bean,
Shrek get macular degeneration just from reading Ilham pieces. By the way how come weekend jazz came early this week. Trigger happy youtuber get away with murder.
Shrek still trying to figure out Anwar’s next move. Check mate.

  41. There you are, Shrek! We miss you man :) I knew you would emerge from the woodwork. I knew you would be reading.

How come weekend came early? Din Merican has to catch the slow boat to China, I guess. But somehow his boat is still berthed. Maybe drkam doesn’t want to go?

  42. Hahaha.., Shrek’s getting macular degeneration from ilham?
That happens when one deals with ‘depth’ charges.
Persuant to FMG, Shrek & Bean, do piercings contravene the WHO guidelines?

  43. SORRY GUYS – OUT OF TOPICS BUT STILL TOPIC OF INTEREST.
    =========================================

    HELO GUYS.

HOW CAN YOU PROSECUTE SOMEONE WITHOUT EVIDENCE.

PKR SAYS THEY HAVE THE PERSON WITH THE EVIDENCE, THEN WHY NOT BRING THIS PERSON TO THE OPEN.

STRANGELY, WHEN THIS MATTER WAS FIRST BROUGHT TO THE PUBLIC ATTENTION AND WHEN THE ROYAL COMMISION WAS CONVENE TO INVESTIGATE THE CALIMS, I VIVIDLY REMEMBER THIS PERSON BY THE NAME GWO BRUNE…. I FORGET HIS REAL NAME WHO IS NOW A YB. FOR PAKATAN RAKYAT WAS ONE OF THE Y KEY WITNEES WHO TESTIFIED AGAINST LINGAM WHO HAS SECRETLY VIDEOD AND TAPPING LINGAM CONVERSATION OVER THE PHONE TO SOMEONE UNKNOWN TO GW BRUNO AND HIS FATHER WHEN THEY WERE VISITING LINGAM AT LINGAM HOUSE.

STRANGE…STRANGE…STRANGE…THIS MATTER ONLY APPEARS WHEN ANWAR TRIAL DATE IS ABOUT TO BE SET ON NOV.03.2009 AND THE CHAOTIC SITUATION IN PKR AND PR.

THIS IS ANOTHER ATTEMP BY ANWAR, PKR AND PR TO DIVERT THE PEOPLE ATTENTION FROM THE CORE ISSUE THAT IS THE TRIAL DATE OF ANWAR IBRAHIM FOR SODOMISING SAIFUL ON NOV.03.2009.

WE CAN EASILY READ YOUR GAME AND YOUR NEXT MOVE.

WE KNOW WHAT YOU ARE UP TO.

ANWAR, ENOUGH OF YOUR TRICKS. THE RAKYAT ARE NO FOOLS.

ANWAR FOR YOUR INFO, THE DEMISE OF PKR AND PR IS IMMINENT.

    EVENTUALLY, THE TRUTH WILL PREVAIL.
