Sabah PKR at odds over Anwar’s pick

by Joe Fernandez

Sabah PKR seems set to face renewed infighting following the appointment of Ahmad Thamrin Jaini, an Anwar Ibrahim loyalist, as the new Sabah state chief.

Generally, the party’s Sabah membership appears unhappy that Anwar himself made the appointment during the supreme council meet yesterday.  “We don’t agree with Thamrin heading Sabah PKR since the party’s constitution was in breach. Anwar had no right to appoint him,” said former Deputy Sabah PKR chief Daniel John Jambun.

“We will discuss Thamrin’s appointment at an emergency meeting on Tuesday in Kota Kinabalu. Everybody will also agree that he’s a poor performer.”  Jambun indicated that only members of the party’s powerful KadazanDusunMurut Task Force (KDMTF), headed by him, would meet. He described the KDMTF as a pro-autonomy group within PKR that controls 18 of the party’s 25 divisions in Sabah.

The KDMTF appears to be the proverbial tail wagging the dog. kitingan project ic 250107 jeffery kitinganHigh on the agenda would be a fax and hand-delivered brief sent yesterday morning to Wan Azizah by 14 division chiefs proposing that Keningau division chief Jeffrey Gapari Kitingan (left) be appointed as Sabah State PKR Chief.

Kitingan, according to a spokesperson for the 14 division chiefs who briefed Wan Azizah before the supreme council meet, in fact outranks all the other division chiefs as a party vice-president. Hence, protocol-wise it would not also be the done thing to have any of the other division chiefs lording it over him when convening meetings of the division chiefs.

‘Puppet’ leaders

Thamrin, Jambun charged, is a member of a group dubbed as proxies of Kuala Lumpur. Many of them, according to Jambun, are also tainted by their suspected links with various syndicates who have been caught red-handed for their involvement in the bogus MyKad scam.

Others, it is said, have been held previously under the ISA for placing illegal immigrants on the electoral rolls. Jambun Ansari_Abdullah1was referring to Hassnar Ebrahim, the former Libaran division chief – the same division now held by Thamrin – as a case in point. Hassnar, who is eyeing the post of Batu Sapi division chief, doesn’t deny anything.

“Single-handedly, I alone placed 15,000 illegal immigrants on the electoral rolls within the two years 1985 to 1987,” admits Sabahan Hassnar in an exclusive interview with malaysiakini.

Hassnar, who was held under the ISA (Internal Security Act) just before PBS (Parti Bersatu Sabah) returned to the BN in the early 2000s, also alleged that 135,000 illegal immigrants were placed on the electoral rolls between 1970 and 1985 by other renegade operatives.

“This is why the Malaysian identity card was changed from blue to one with the bunga raya motif and again to the present MyKad system,” claims Hassnar.  The whole idea was to make it extremely difficult for anyone to trace the illegal immigrants entering the electoral rolls, he added.

Hassnar, who is presently suing the police for RM30 million in a case not related to his ISA detention, claims the practice of placing illegal immigrants on the electoral rolls is still taking place, albeit more discreetly, even with the mobile court system.

“Tawau PKR division chief Kong Hong Ming was right when he recently alleged that the illegal immigrants in the district are getting their hands on MyKads,” he added, underlining also Jambun’s concerns over “proxies and traitors” in PKR being more than in the know about the bogus MyKad menace in the state.

No mandate to choose

Jambun was asked about Azmin’s claim during the supreme council meet yesterday that he was advised by the Sabah divisional chiefs to inform the party president that she has the full mandate to pick the next state chief.

“This is not true,” said Jambun. “During the special meeting in Kota Kinabalu on October 22, the divisional chiefs felt that Azmin had no business presiding over a session of Sabahans trying to pick their leader from among themselves,” said Jambun.

“He should have excused himself from the meeting to allow a vote to be carried out. Instead, he was talking all the time and trying to railroad the divisional chiefs into a decision already made by KL.” Jambun also added that the emergency KDMTF meeting will also discuss Anwar’s purported remarks during the supreme council meet yesterday.

“We are disturbed that Anwar said that ‘there’s no way in hell that he would allow Jeffrey to be Sabah PKR state chief’,” said Jambun. “If it’s true, then PKR in Sabah is finished.”  Anwar’s explanation was that Kitingan had a hidden agenda (against KL) in Sabah and “it would be very difficult to control him”.

Kitingan, when reached in KL last night at a leading hotel, expressed disappointment with the new developments (regarding Sabah) in the supreme council. He dismissed the hidden agenda charge as “the same lies repeated by former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad” to facilitate his detention under the ISA in the early 1990s.

“I don’t know anything about the emergency meeting of the KDMTF,” said Kitingan. “I will know more when I return home on Tuesday morning. My main concern now is to help save the party.”  Kitingan said that he knew that “something was not right” when Thamrin kept avoiding him and other division chiefs over the last two weeks.

Subsequently, he heard that Thamrin had gone with two other division chiefs to meet with Anwar in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday, October 20. Ansari has since denied that he was one of the other division chiefs.

Kitingan keeping cards close

Kitingan, who is on a three- month sabbatical, did not attend the supreme council meet. Neither did Kota Kinabalu division chief Christina Liew. The sole representative from Sabah was Tuaran division chief Ansari Abdullah.  Earlier, according to reliable sources in KL, Liew had warned party president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail in a short text message against picking a proxy in Sabah.

Thamrin replaces Azmin who was forced to quit his post after 16 divisional chiefs expressed no confidence in him on October  7. This follows the act of 18 divisional chiefs including the 16, Thamrin from Libaran and Johani Abdul Halim from Silam signing the September 20 memorandum calling for Azmin to be sacked.

However, during the special meeting in Kota Kinabalu on Oct 22 chaired by Azmin, Thamrin, Johani and Kudat division chief Mursalim Tanjul openly begged the outgoing state chief’s forgiveness for signing the memorandum, according to insiders.

Senior PKR activist Richard Jayasuriya, president of the deregistered Parti Pasok (Native), isn’t surprised that Thamrin has been picked by Anwar to lead the party’s chapter in Sabah. Asked whether he knew in advance that this was going to happen, he merely responded: “It’s a long story”, giving credence to the theory that Anwar made his decision shortly after Wan Azizah received the Sept 20 memorandum.

mk50This may be the reason why Thamrin, who signed the Sept 20 memorandum, did not sign the October 7 and 25 resolutions on Kitingan.

  1. It’s obvious that Jeffrey Kitingan is manipulating the situation there. He desparately want to head PKR in Sabah for the obvious reason. Although he’s no doubt popular there, I don’t think he can be trusted at all. Don’t be surprised that he’s a plant by the BN and he’ll do a Brutus on Pakatan in due course. If Pakatan were to win the next state election and form the government, this is one man who can destroy it all by crossing to the BN and taking with him all his followers. Don’t forget he is Parin brother and like they say, blood is thicker than water.

  2. All party positions and public offices in the states of Sabah and Sarawak should be held by locals. It is natural to view carpet baggers with suspicion. But a total ban on carpet baggers would not serve the national interest. So perhaps there should be a law requiring those who vie for public positions make their homes in the state they wish to serve.

  3. In the U.S. the fight for support of the Latino votes is critical. In the recent presidential election, the support given to Obama was 2:1 by Latinos. Latinos want to see a legal pathway to U.S. citizenship for their illegal parents, brothers and sisters and cousins and uncles and aunts already in the country.

This has some parallel to what is happening in East Malaysia which has a common border with Kalimantan Indonesia and Philippines. The borders are even more porous than the Mexican-U.S. border. The Mexicans would cross the borders in numbers with the help of coyotes or agents, given fake Social Security numbers and with those they could take DL (driving licenses which serve as IDs). FBI stings reveal syndicates operating within INS (now USCIS) and agencies issuing driving licenses.

But because of the corrupt regime in Putrajaya perhaps tittering on the brink of collapse, the problems in East Malaysia are much more serious. Will Pakatan play the same dirty game and offer to make illegal aliens permanent residents and then citizens if they vote for the opposition?

Ataupun jadi spokesperson for PKR and menonggeng kat Nuar je.

  5. 25th October : “PKR forms National Integration Council for Sabah and Sarawak… it puts to rest any rumours of serious disputes among leaders…it is unity time for PKR”

26th. October : “PKR situation apparently remains unresolved”

    27th. October : Watch this space…

  6. Strange, why Azizah do the dirty job and not Anwar.

Pity Azizah, how could a husband like Anwar did this to his wife of many years.

If he can play this dirty game to his wife, I’m not surprise if he is capable of doing worse than this to all Malaysian” if he is in power.

    GOD forbid’s.

So DIN MERICAN, you got it.. Never trust this guy.

He proof it himself, see how disgusting he is..

So DIN MERICAN stop protecting him go and find other job.

There are abundance of job out there waiting for you.

I don’t see any probelm of you getting a job.

If you do, don’t hesitate to call me.

Afterall what are friend’s for, right DIN MERICAN.

  8. What charm has Zulkifli Nordin over Anwar that he is so shy to rebuke or discipline this turkey? Anwar is very eloquent in his speech and writing but is very lacking in the visibility of his actions. Until and unless Anwar starts to walk the talk, he will be perceived as a charlatan.

Now another problem has arisen in Sabah and Anwar is exhibiting his ineptness as a visionary leader. While the Pakatan is burning down, Anwar is too busy cultivating a different constituency overseas. What the heck is Anwar so enamoured with his upscale foreign clienteles that he has totally abandoned to nurture his fledging child at home? In the meantime there is quarelling, plotting and stabbing galore among his coalition partners and also within his own party and no actions were taken to steer the Pakatan into the right path.

If this situation still persists up to the end of 2009 and Anwar is still fiddling with his new passion then let Pakatan be buried and a new party without any racial baggage be formed sans Anwar.

    ‘Mengapa saya saja digelar katak?’

“S46 masuk balik Umno.

    ‘Sama saja…’

“Kenapa saya…kalau lompat (digelar) lontong, monyet, kera… tapi orang lain berapa ramai, Datuk Rais Yatim (Umno-S46-Umno) dan Datuk Shabery Cheek (S46-Umno),” katanya.

ITM universiti, ITM universiti…

“Kemudian bila saya jadi timbalan menteri pada 1997, saya kata, inilah kesempatan paling baik. Saya himpunkan 15,000 bekas siswazah ITM di Stadium Melawati. Waktu

itu Datuk Seri Najib (Tun Razak) selaku menteri pelajaran. Saya pengerusi perhimpunan.

Tanyalah siswazah ITM. Tanyalah (bekas pengarah ITM), Tan Sri Arsyad Ayub, pergilah tanya…,” katanya.

  11. [anwaribrahimdotcom] Hubungan Anwar Ibrahim dan George Soros

    Posted On 10/26/2009 06:06:00 PM by pisau.net |

    Bantuan Soros pusingan kedua

Antaranya; Sarlo Foundation of the Jewish Community Endowment Fund, Ford Foundation, Carnegie Corporation of New York, United States Institute of Peace dan lain-lain lagi.

  12. “Now another problem has arisen in Sabah and Anwar is exhibiting his ineptness as a visionary leader. While the Pakatan is burning down, Anwar is too busy cultivating a different constituency overseas.” vsp

With the corrupted judges over Anwar Sodomy case, the prospect for him to get a fair trial is very slim. With a nation public that is too timid to speak up and stand up against obvious abuse of prosecutorial power, Anwar cannot rely solely on the nation public for preventing him from getting jailled unjustly for the second time. One of the remaining hopes is international pressure – after all we are export-oriented country. International pressure could slow down the pace of dirty game to be played out by BN-UMNO. Now, PKR has yet another internal trouble needs his attention. I think Anwar has a tough job.

  13. Uh, isn’t spam haram? Ought to look into this dear ‘inspired’ one.

What’s happening in Sabah will haunt the king-making process for PKR for a long time. Just remember that the KDM or any Sabahan for that matter have very independent, parochial and tribal ideas, especially when it comes to imposing unpopular edicts on them…
Despite Jeffry and Ansari’s incompatibility, they are the taikors. A gnat in the middle will just get squashed, even if he has all the backing of the ‘central’ leadership.

Otoh, Sarawak’s appointment of Baru Bian was excellent. What seems to be the problem in Sabah? The simple fact that there was little consensus building with the locals and probably the fact that not many trust Anwar in turn.

  14. Like what the late Ghaffar Baba once said ‘Pairin will be digging his own grave’ and thanks to his kid brother , Jeffrey who renegade against him . Big brother , Pairin really did dig his own grave . Now the tides have turn around so it seems on Anwar . Perhaps this time around Anwar will be digging his!

I , with all honesty do not fancy Dr. Jeffrey too much inspite of him portraying himself as an educated native warrior , defender of Sabah’s rights.

And mind you , as Joe Fernendez , who has been around long enough would acknowledge that this is no racist remarked . It’s just that , whenever Dr. Kitingan’s name pops-up ,Sabahan’s are constantly reminded of the proverbal question : Why did the chicken cross the road jumped into the ditch and cross back again?

Answer : Because the chicken is a dirty double crosser!

  15. Whichever way one looks at it, the current situation in Sabah doesn’t look good for Pakatan or more correctly PKR. The combination of ex-frogs, wannabe frogs, political rejects, hired guns and millionaire hopefuls manipulating and jockeying for leadership positions far overwhelmed those who are really sincere in wanting a better Malaysia and a new government. Unfortunately as in the case of the whole country, the bad guys always win the day. PKR have been warned many times to be prudent in selecting their leaders but this has not been heeded. Sabah and Sarawak are going to be the king maker for Pakatan. Due attention and effort must be made to soothe weary spirits there before Jibby calls for a GE otherwise it’s going to be a lost cause for the opposition.

  16. As anywhere else it’s the warlords that hold the nation and it’s people to ransom. We’ve still mired in a Third World mentality notwithstanding what is said and done. You can cry yourself hoarse nothing constructive will come out in the end. The same faces will continue to call the shots. All these talks about reforming the masses and the party have come to naught. It’s business as usual. Period.

  17. Danil, absolutely true with regards to above. Independence can sometimes be taken to the ‘extreme’, without recognizing the dangers. But it begs the question, why him as a VP in the first place?
Tok Cik too has said it well, but i guess we are all suckers and masochists sometime or other.

  18. PKR – stands for Parti Kelirukan Rakyat. This the party which has a President but seem powerless. Funny enough PKR is run by Ketua Umum i.e Anwar Ibrahim. Ketua Umum post is not even provided in the PKR Constitution.

  19. Anak Bangau and other friends,

I know all the key players in PKR Sabah (Christina Liew, Ansari Abdullah and Jeffery G. Kittingan). They all have strengths and spheres of influence. If only they could work together within the framework of PKR’s overall reformist agenda of Freedom, Democracy and Justice, PKR would have been a force to reckon with in 2008. The fact that political tsunami that hit mainland Malaysia and brought a premature end of the Badawi administration did not come to Sabah was due to disunity and personal ambitions of the main protagonists in PKR Sabah who worked at cross purposes.

These personalities are still around and according to one party insider, the solution is straightforward and that is, Anwar Ibrahim should take all of them out of the Sabah political equation and appoint a completely new team. Furthermore, the trio did not deliver in the last elections. How I wish politics were like business where non-performers are given the boot. In politics, there are no neat solutions. It is about compromises and sacrifice for a common purpose.

One political observer who has returned from Kota Kinabalu yesterday told me this afternoon that he was impressed with Christina and Jeffery. He thought Ansari is the real problem for PKR Sabah. Therefore, he thinks that appointing Thamrin would not settle the issue. He believes that Jeffery, as one of the incumbent Vice President, is the PKR man for Sabah: he is an intellectual and a superb leader who has the stature to match the likes of Musa Aman, Yong Teck Lee and Joseph Pairin Kitinggan and to lead PKR in the GE13. He suggested that Anwar and Jeffery should have a 4-eyes meeting, and put their cards on the table.

I do not know enough about Sabah politics to comment on the undercurrents of PKR there. But I do believe that a solution to the present “crisis” must be found. It, however, cannot be based on religion (Christian vs. Muslim) and ethnicity (Kadazan vs Malay). The choice must be made on the basis of a leader’s background, leadership qualities, and experience. In addition, a leader should be able to attract financial support from people because without money, even the best minds cannot perform. Sponsors usually back a winner, not a loser.

Wan Azizah is the President of the party and what she says matters. It is easily forgotten that during the days when Anwar was in Sungei Buloh, she held the party together and was for many years the lone PKR voice in Parliament. That speaks volume of her leadership qualities. I have personally witnessed Anwar seeking her views on political and other matters. This gentle medical doctor is the voice of reason and circumspection in PKR. She is not powerless as she may appear to those of us who do not know her well.

My two cent worth of comments for your consideration.—Din Merican

  20. What’s happening may well be a glimpse into the future administration under Pakatan. They cannot put their own act together. Administration will be so politicised that the work of the people would take a back seat.

It’s monkey politics. See what happens to the goat when monkeys see monkeys do?? It is clear who the goat represents.

Let’s face facts. President Sukarno was wrong when he accused Malaysia of being a British neo-colonialist plot (an allegation even he knew to be false) but he was right in that the people of Sabah (and Sarawak) have more in common with people in Indonesian Kalimantan and less with peninsular Malaysia – in terms of language, culture and customs, religion, demographics and history. Though it would be a real stretch to expect the Brits to be talking to the leader of a former Dutch colony about possible incorporation of its territories into the republic, it could well be the logical thing to do.

As it turned out, Sabah in particular was brought kicking and screaming into the so-called federation of Malaysia but without Singapore the confederation has so changed its character that the idea of retaining these territories is politically indefensible in the long run. At some point it is natural for them to want to be independent.

The people of Alaska, Hawaii and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico (whose people today are U.S. citizens though Puerto Rico itself is not one of the states within the federation with a representative in the U.S. Congress) want to be parts of the federation of blue and red states known as the United States of America.

Not so in the case of Sabah and Sarawak. The peoples of Sabah and Sarawak want to stop the flow of carpetbaggers from West Malaysia who have made vast personal fortunes at their expense.

  22. Sabah has suffered much under Mustapaha, Fuad Stephen and Harris Salleh. They had treated the state as their own fiefdom helping themselves to the vast untapped natural resources available.

The current turmoil has much to do with how these past leaders had managed the state. I served in Kota Belud, Kudat and Bangi Island in the late 60s and early 70s and had seen the excesses of Tun Mustapha. His palatial bungalows in Kudat, Kota Belud and Kota Kinabalu stood out like a sore thump admist the slums of these Sabahan towns. Infamous Zakaria Darus of Port Klang pales in comparison.

You are right, Bean. There is no love lost. Sabahans (and Sarawakians) are wary of West Malaysians believing them to be the new colonists. Those days they would vent their frustration on us soldiers, especially members of the Malay regiments. That was then. It hasn’t changed much today.

PKR needs to find a way to overcome this negative perception. If and unless it is prepared to change, nothing much can come of its overtures however good they may sound or seen.

  23. Yep, remember the days that “West Malaysians” were welcomed only if they were holding passports.
Heck, in my profession the only way i could ‘practice’ there was to marry a local lass and get a permit, biri-biri notwithstanding!

  24. Yes, Tok Cik.

We are not unlike the Americans in South Vietnam; and Americans in Afghanistan today. In Vietnam in the 60s the Americans ended up supporting the corrupt regime of Ngo Dinh Diem who was eventually assassinated by the CIA. Perhaps the same fate awaits Hamid Karzai.

From the beginning we were supporting one corrupt regime after another. Tun Mustapha made himself governor and later chief minister, enriching himself through huge timber concessions in return for the role he played in bringing Sabah into the federation. The Sabah Air plane crash in 1975 which killed the Chief Minister Fuad Stephens and Peter Mojuntin and other state ministers might as well be divine retribution for the sins committed against the natives of Sabah.

Politics in Sabah were nothing more than power grabs by one set of thieves against the other with Kuala Lumpur supporting one against the other. When Tun Mustapha driven by greed fell out with Kuala Lumpur, there was Harris Salleh and Berjaya and when Berjaya lost in 1985, I met several of these thieves and looters during their self exile abroad. Several of them ended up being contemporaries of V.K. Lingam (of korek, korek fame) sharing the same alma mater.

  25. No matter how embarassing it may be for a Sabahan to admit , but the reality is , the quality of leadership Sabah had produced down the years and keeps on producing is leading the state towards it’s own destruction

  27. Tun Mustapha made himself governor and later chief minister- Bean

Tun Mustapha was an ill educated native chief of suluk descent, who in his early years used to run errands for the Japs during the Japanese occupation.

On later years when the idea of forming Malaysia surfaced ,he was picked by the Brits as a representative of the muslim native community to negotiate the setting-up of malaysia.

What is not known to many is that Tun Mustapha was duped into taking up the position of ‘Gabenor’ by the rest of the better educated lot . The postion which he thought came with the powers similar to that of the British Governor.

Realising later that the governorship he was clinging on too unlike the status of the British Governor was purely ceremonial , after decisions were taken and done without his consent. He was enraged and began to revolt and with KLs helped and with religion as an excused , he was made CM.

But the manipulation did not end there , far from it.

For a person without proper credentials, who in the first place should’ve not been entrusted with the CMs post . It was an obvious recipe for disaster.

Apparently , with Tun Mustapha at the helm , It was the beginning of far worst things to come and with the arrival of KL sent Syed Kechik who in fact cordoned every bad moved due to self-interest.
Syed Kechik , the man Tun Razak relied upon to assist Tun Mustapha was instead behind every mis-demeanor of the states administration.

The Sabah Air plane crash in 1975 which killed the Chief Minister Fuad Stephens and Peter Mojuntin and other state ministers might as well be divine retribution for the sins committed against the natives of Sabah – Bean

It coud’ve been divine , for all we know

What ever it was , this double six air tragedy which occured in 1976 has a telling tale behind it. But it wont be right for me to spell it out here. The story has several versions. I’ve my own but besides saying , as a young boy at that time and amongst the first to be at the site of the crashed which happened at the vicinity of where I once lived , its suffice to say , amongst the lost were family acquaintance and one of my best friends , his dad.
The rest of the details may be some other time.

  28. Small world Danildaud. Fascinating new light to Tun Mustapha. I believed he tried to take Sabah out of Malaysia? Or was it that Ningkan guy from Sarawak?

  29. This is the conundrum Anwar faces – he has to give the Sabahans an offer they cannot refuse,or at least what BN can never give them, to bring them on board and we all know what the Sabahans, deep in their hearts, wanted.
It is going to take Anwar more than his charm to pull this one through. :)
