Azmin Ali justifies his criticism of Tan Sri Khalid’s Selangor State Government
By Neville Spykerman
Selangor backbenchers chief Azmin Ali, who broke party ranks by hitting out at his own Pakatan Rakyat (PR) state government, today justified his action by saying it was his responsibility.
“It’s nothing personal.” said the Bukit Antarabangsa state lawmaker, who also called for the reshuffle of the state executive council (Exco) and hinted for new faces to be appointed. Azmin, who raised a litany of complaints at the state legislative assembly yesterday, said he was only voicing the frustrations of the business community and people on the ground.
Among his criticisms are red tape at the state Economic Planning Unit (MTES) which he claims is stifling businesses, the haphazard appointments of local councillors and the state’s policy on sand mining, which he says only generated RM4 million in profits.
The outburst by the Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) party whip was not a surprise to party insiders who have indicated that Azmin has been unhappy with Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim and his administration for some time now.
Azmin is seen as a challenger to the mentri besar and his calls to reshuffle are believed to be in line with his political ambitions.
He piled on the pressure today when he told the reporters he had the support of his fellow backbenchers and even senior government servants but repeated he was leaving it to Khalid to decide how best to reshuffle his Exco team. PR insiders are bracing themselves for Azmin’s next move and are adopting a wait and see attitude.
“There is little that can be done because of his popularity among backbenchers and PKR grassroots,” said a party insider who indicated the PKR vice-president also has the ear of party adviser Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who is distracted by his upcoming sodomy trial.
Khalid has so far played down Azmin’s criticism saying it was well within his rights to express his views.
To date only Exco member Ean Yong Hian Wah has expressed unhappiness with Azmin’s conduct in the House. “I am shocked and regret Azmin’s suggestion for the Exco to be reshuffled and his criticisms of red tape at MTES which he called a ‘High Court,’” said the Seri Kembangan state lawmaker.
Ean Yong said since PR took over Selangor, the state government had been reviewing all privatisation projects which have not brought any benefit to the people. He said many such contracts had been signed without in depth studies by the previous administration and MTES is the right forum to resolve these issues.
“I want to stress that if Azmin is given an opportunity to become mentri besar he would take the same steps to ensure the rights and benefits of the people are protected.” He added that as an experienced politician and as PR backbencher chief, Azmin should have expressed his dissatisfaction using the proper channels.
Ean Yong, who is also DAP’s state chairman, said the party wanted a closer relationship with its partners from PKR and PAS.

What are Azmin Ali’s academic credentials and resume like? Anyone?

Azmin has an American degree in Mathametical Statistics and Economics. He is a very competent individual with a flair for politics. He is one of PKR’s Vice President and a trusted aide of Anwar Ibrahim. He is also a successful businessman.

Then he has my vote.

Pakatan wake up and seriously start working for the people. Even if what Najib’s spinmeisters is doing to shore up his credibility is a publicity stunt, Pakatan frequent and crazy idiosyncrasies of shooting themselves in the foot will soon drive people to believe in his propaganda.
I think Anwar should spend more time nurturing the coalition instead of missing in action. He is spending too much time overseas to win a different audience instead of noticing how little Napoleans within Pakatan are wrecking havoc.

I must agree with Azmin as Eli Wong is still a virgin and has no experience to be an Exco.
Tean - July 10, 2009 at 11:23 pm
In my opinion, there is nothing for Azmin Ali to justify for, if his criticisms were made in good faith and without a political agenda.
Personally I think he had made a relevant point but unfortunately ordinary Malaysians today are so skeptical of politicians that despite all their good intentions, we remain suspicious!
Such is the sorry state of affairs in Malaysia after 52 years of UMNO/BN rule!
In a way, you have to hand it to the UMNO/BN goons. They have managed to get ordinary Malaysians tripping over themselves for supporting the PR!

After all these 39 years?? That’s 39 years too long to have to wait to open a bottle.

Azmin Ali has a clean track record and a reassuring presence. I like the guy even though I have hardly exchanged more than two words with him. I’m sure there’s some substance to his feedback, and there’s really no cause for too many feathers to be ruffled. YB Khalid Ibrahim comes across as a goodnatured fellow but I feel he moves a bit too slowly for the younger Azmin. Nevertheless, I was so happy to see Khalid as MB after years of suffering tthe contemptible arrogance and greed of that hideous monster, the tempe-breathed Botox-faced Javanese jin from Hell, Apanama? Being MB of Selangor isn’t a cushy job. If I were Khalid, I’d start grooming Azmin to take over in a couple of years!

I wellcome construstive critism for a better governance.
Now its time to act and showed the rakyat that PR mean business! These policies shall be the basis of PR governance and this must already been showed and implemented in the PR states. No more politicking (within party, PR intra-party etc), after sometime the rakyat will be frustrated. Show the rakyat transparent policy, corporate governance, just to all and fairness to every rakyat (even if he is from BN) in the PR ruling state These can be an eye opener to those whom distrust, fence sitter etc for their votes in GE13. The shadow ministry committee set up recently is a good start. Show us the result, recommendation and findings in the PR newspaper say every three month (surely it is impossible to share that in the mainstream media). Let the rakyat know the PR is ready now to govern the country. Let show us, the rakyat that we have an option and a viable one!
The economic overview is still gloom. No positive development in many of our leading industries in particular electronics, automotive. FDI is decreasing year to year. The price of our commodity is not encouraging at all. With the recent H1NI outbreak, high crime rates and unfavorable economic, the rakyat is scared and feel uncertain.
With many un-resolved scandals and new scandal coming up, the rakyat is/had already lost their faith in BN. This is the time where all PR leaders walk the talk. If they do not feel or able to shoulder the burden, they should resigned and let others to take the job.
We, the rakyat are hoping and it is already showing now that a new era has begun.. dawn of the new era.
From the people, To the people & For the people!

Nazryan, You pernah dengar tak orang kata “Nafsu kuat, tenaga kurang”.
Kalau you tak tau tanya Dr. Bean.
Tean - July 11, 2009 at 3:05 pm
Well Tean,
Sekurang2nya peringatan dari Azmin mesti diambil kira oleh semua pemimpin PR. Janganlah seperti mencurah di daun keladi. Its a wake up call.
Walau nafsu kuat, tenaga kurang, tapi kalau semua berkerjasama – nothing is impossible. Tapi kalau tak boleh juga, mungkin you are not good enough and should pass the baton to those whom you think can.
nazryan - July 11, 2009 at 6:43 pm
That translates to “Desire got but stamina short”
That is like asking DAP to prod PKR from behind. It is like putting Karpal Singh behind Khalid and ask Karpal to chase him. The chasing will not be long but then what??
Maria Ozawa will be out of a job. There’s nothing left to teach. Inul Daratista will not be able to goyang, Astrid Daramina would have lost her kacang and ended up with pisang awak instead of pisang ambon.
Clint Eastwood says “Make my day” Arnold says “I’ll be back” and Madoff says “I will never get out” and Michael Jackson says “I’m gone”.
Life goes on.

sand requirement in selangor is 100,000 tonnes a day.Semesta supplies 1500 tons a day.what nonsense is this?
_______
If so, Jo, the Chairman and the Board of Directors of Semesta must take responsibility for the overall operations of the company, not the Menteri Besar. Something is wrong with the company’s management.–Din Merican

New Yorker Bean,
You have become a philosopher. “Make my day,” that’s Dirty Harry alright. MJ did not have time to say “I’m gone”. Yes life goes on. Have a good weekend. –Din Merican

Friends,
Both Khalid and Azmin are dynamic leaders of PKR and reflect the quality of people we wish to attract for the cause. Both of them are my good friends and I respect them for their dedication and commitment. Our culture permits open criticism as it is our strength. But when the crunch comes we are all united in our resolve to usher in change.
In Selangor, we inherited a backlog of problems left behind by that corrupt Toyol and we also have to deal with civil servants in the state who are still loyal to UMNO-BN. That said, Exco members who have not performed, or have used their position for personal gain, must be removed. Not that easy since Khalid must talk to his coalition partners before he can act.
That said, Khalid must not micromanage; he should appoint capable people and delegate. Businessmen are impatient with the slow pace of decision making.Furthermore. time is not on our side, given it has been nearly 18 months since PR took over the government in Selangor.. We cannot afford to get bogged down with the garbage of the Toyol Administration.–Din Merican
