Anwar: Penanti marks beginning of BN’s end

If March 8, 2008 marked the shattering of the myth of Barisan Nasional’s invincibility, May 18, 2009 – the day the once formidable coalition declined to contest a by-election – may well go down in history as the beginning of the coalition’s end.

This is the prognosis of PKR leader Anwar Ibrahim who in remarks made to Malaysiakini today expressed surprise that although BN had earlier signaled a reluctance to contest, it has elected to go with its instincts and sit out the by-election.

“They say perception is everything in politics so this decision not to contest cannot avoid being perceived as the BN finally acknowledging it is beaten in what can be regarded as its heartland,” opined Anwar.

“Penanti is a 70 percent Malay constituency. For the BN to decline to contest in an area where hitherto they would not bat an eyelid to contest is proof that, right now, uneasy lies the head that wears the crown,” remarked the PKR supremo.

“No matter how the BN dresses up this decision not to contest, the reality cannot be evaded that they are on the run – not just in Perak, but also in the semi-rural areas such as Penanti in Penang,” he added.

Between myth and reality

Anwar also commented on the incongruity of Foreign Affairs Minister Anifah Aman wanting to joust with him in court over his claim that the opposition leader had allegedly propositioned him to crossover while his own party, UMNO, declines to take PKR on in a by-election.

“It tells of a coalition that cannot differentiate between myth and reality, between the essential and the extraneous, between suggestion and extrapolation,” asserted Anwar. Anwar said this dissonance is the telltale sign of the BN’s falling apart. “The centre is not holding because all along the periphery things are falling apart for them,” he said.

Last week, Anifah told the US press in Washington D.C. that he was offered the deputy prime minister post should he defect to Pakatan. On Saturday, Anwar had vehemently denied he had made the offer, and had yesterday sent a legal letter demanding an apology from Anifah in seven days.

  1. test

  2. What are you testing? Your typing skills?

  3. Why are we making such a fuss over BN’s failure or decision not to contest in an obscure Malay dominated constituency which happens to be in Anwar’s own backyard??

They have a right not to i.e. the very same right we give ourselves.

If BN leaders think they can turn a loss into a victory by just making it appear like they are not going to let politics paralyze their administration, then they are only fooling themselves. They seem to forget the power of the internet and its ability to bring home the point to the masses and the fact that today’s electorate cannot be easily fooled the way they fool themselves.

So can we just move on? This topic has been overworked.

  4. “The centre is not holding because all along the periphery things are falling apart for them”
The centre itself is in self destruct mode because of all the factionalism – they can’t contest because they are having a civil war within the supreme council, methinks. The periphery continues to crumble as witnessed by today’s mass defections in Kangar.
Time is running out for them is Perak, even though they may want to continue to ‘nanti’.

  5. What can I say? Najib like this red ass baboon is on heat!

  6. Look further! No horsing around please!

  7. hahaha … a red assed baboon on heat and an invitation to NAJIB to take her on ? hey .. mr din , let me know if he accepts .. i like to watch .. hahahah .

  8. Thanks, Bean you’ve made my day/night – whatever!

  9. menyalak-er.

  10. Najib made a mess of Perak and he put the blame on others.

Now he blames the PR for playing a political game by forcing by-elections for which he initiated the process. In the first place it was Najib who was using the MACC to pressure Fairus Khairuddin to throw in the towel. This was before the 2 bukit by-elections. Perak was scalped by him and this was a trophy that he took home with him that endorsed his ascendancy to the PM during the UMNO general assembly. So proud and confident was he that it was predicted that the next state to fall was Kedah. So the MACC was unleased to claim more victims. In Selangor, the MB was investigated about cows and car, and in Penang Fairus was hounded. The 2 bukit by-elections was days away and there was talk about BN winning 2 out of 3 seats that were at stake.

Unfortunately, Najib was humilated and got a big slap on the face from the voters. Najib got the message that he would lose if there are further by-elections. So when Fairus announced his resignation, the MACC quickly dropped the charges and the Election Commission declared that Fairus do not need to resign. The investigation on Khalid, the Selangor MB was quickly withdrawn. Next, more resignations from the Pakatan were expected in Selangor, i.e. in Lanjan and Kota Kota Alam Shah that would necessitate by-elections. To forestall another 2 by-elections, Manoharan was released from ISA. Toyol who was hounding Elizabeth Wong for her resignation suddenly became dumb.

So this is Najib’s fiascos and he is now trying to the good guy by blaming the PR for playing games and wasting public money.

  11. Whats all the obsession with red ass baboons?

  12. 6 years in the slammers!!
UMNO conspired to put him there , today he conspires to put them out of service . The man’s ‘blacked eye’ is sparkling once more.

  13. Danildaud,

This red ass baboon has dropped the gauntlet. Watch the video. Will Najib pick it up??

  14. Humility will win the day for ordinary Malaysians, not chest thumping or cowardly retreats. When will Malaysian politicians learn that ordinary Malaysians are tired of nice sounding words but only a return to common sense will suffice?

Why are we treated by both sides like imbeciles where we don’t know right from wrong? Why the need to ‘play-up’ the situation?

Silence here would have spoken a thousand words!

Sorry Din, much as I’m with the cause, the smart play would be for UMNO/BN to implode on it’s own without external help which can only portray us with a selfish agenda!

Middle ground Malaysians are an unpredictable lot especially when they think their intelligence is being insulted!

We move in uncharted waters! Caution my friend without losing sight of the objective.

    A BETTER MALAYSIA.

  15. Nay, Bean, he will not pick up the gauntlet. He will have to run the gauntlet. I do read a little ‘frission’ between the chaser of that red ass baboon and his deputy with regards to the Perak fiasco. Nice mix of ‘innocent’ porn actors (CSL) gamboling with straight laced theocrats (Husam) with Ku Li mixing it up, too.
Yea, we must be quite tired of scummy paradoxical 3rd world politics. I’ll forgo comments until the next “real thing” – Coke, comes along.

  16. If Najib/Umno/BN really cares for the rakyat, they should contest in Penanti regardless out the outcome. Typically for a by-elections. “instant noodle” projects will pour in, and if they win (which is unlikely), then they can fulfill their promise or serving the people. Isn’t it what Najib’s slogan promised?

    So much for “People First”.

  17. Anwar said a lot of things. Why do we have to listen to this one.

I remember he said BN will end on sept 16 ( in fact few dates before that !)

Is there any truth on this one?

Opposition will always become opposition as long as they play with politics instead of serving the people. This is one classic example where PR politics comes first before serving the rakyat.

It is too obvious the intend of Anwar to call by elections. And Najib was quick enough to hint BN will not play Anwar silly games.

btw for those who loves fiction, its time to look at the real fact.

  18. Hei Mickey we understand you’re a hardcore Umno
supporter. No big deal – we accept that.
So mickey tell us why is Ali Rustam or KJ not charge for corruption surely there is ample prove , just ask Tengku Ritheudin .
And why is that ass pincher jj not hail up to court for molestation.
Just to mention a few at a tip of an iceberg

Obviously you’ve heard of cover-ups and selective prosecution or maybe being an umno man you’re to naive or dumb to notice all this!!
Or worst still you agree to it all.

  19. romerz, great to have you back on this blog. Have been silent for quite a while. My friends, Salak and Shrek, have decided to boycott this blog. –Din Merican

  20. Shrek, Salak and Jong would have added color to your blog. An olive branch may be in order.
    ________
No olive branch required. They are always welcome. See my response to Shrek. Kalau merajuk kita semua rugi, Mr. Bean. –Din Merican

  21. I think Mickey being a hard core BN supporter according to Danildaud may want to make the transition to soft porn with pictures of Elizabeth Wong laid bare for all to see :)

For those who have a weak heart and an out-of-control imagination, I do not recommend you to go here http://www.bodohland.com/

  22. I never really believed such pictures exist

  23. I feel Anwar’s handling of the Elizabeth Wong affair was wrong. He should have shown leadership and nipped it in the bud instead of allowing the MB to take the matter to the sultan and by doing so involved the palace in the private sordid affair of his majesty’s citizens.

  24. ‘Soft porn’ now Bean has a point here! What say you mickey?
Good chance you’ll be cast alongside the red ass baboons on your debut!!

  25. Din and Bean
Shrek didn’t boycott this blog. Shrek was just complying with the blog owner’s request. This is a serious blog and the blog owner only entertains serious entries, not the trivial floosie ones. Shrek can’t come up with gems of serious discourse for all subject matters and as such refrain from commenting. Shrek have problem writing a serious discourse about red ass babboons.
    ___________
Shrek, welcome back. I have met you in Subang Jaya some years ago. I know you are a very serious and intelligent former MCS officer and have lots of practical common sense. Less pomeloes, more ideas and views. I am also looking for them, not boobs, etc from my friends and associates who are contributors to this blog.

Your support and interest have made this blog what is today. If it is a good blog, credit must go to all of you. Thanks, chaps. If the blog is sub-par, then I take the entire blame and will do my utmost to make it better. Of course, I do not expect everyone to agree with me; mickey for one is dedicated to say the very opposite and seeks to find an alternative pro-UMNO/BN stuff to post on this blog. That is fine as I am far more tolerant of differences than those people in UMNO and Barisan Nasional. They can’t take a joke, always either on the defensive or in a state of denial!!

Occasionally, jokes are welcome. But my blog will be judged by the quality of the discourse and the company I keep. You are welcome to share “dirty” jokes with me when we meet in private, but not in the public domain. I do not need remind you that I am responsible all views and comments I allow on this blog. Bean has told me about this very often, but he violates that advice from time to time to my utter chagrin.—Din Merican

  26. Hey welcome back Shrek!!!

    LOL

  27. All red ass baboons welcome you and the others back!

  28. Din, Bean,
What welcome back? Shrek never left, just stop making comments but if you look closely you might recognize another handle.
Shrek was never in the MCS but have lots of friends in PTD. Shrek has always been in the private sector save a short comm stint and a couple of years with LHDN.
Shrek is not a serious fellow as you make it out to be. Shrek is sensitive and a perfectionist, loves music and fiercely independent.
Saudara Anwar needs to stop making statements such as Penanti is beginning of BN end and similar to the 916 declaration. The public is tired and is looking for actions and results. If none forthcoming the public will lose confidence and will swing back to BN.

  29. Hi Sherk,

You’re sorely missed by all. Din too and he has said it many times over. Don’t take his words too seriously. He took several swipes at us too but we persevered. Bean is the one who constantly remind us about you. Good on him.

    Cheers, matey.

  30. Look Shrek,

What can and will Din Merican do without us? Let’s be modest about it.

He may have to close down his blog or at least let his Cik Cun take over. With Cik Cuk he himself said earlier he should expect to lose and he hates to lose. Those are his own words. My advice to him is that he may have to lose in order to win – or those headaches will keep coming.

You and I don’t have many teeth left. Tok Cik has gold teeth, gold that once belonged to dead CTs. Others would wear such trophies around their necks but he’d rather have them in his mouth. That way the last thought before his backseat companions lose consciousness would be his glittering teeth. The extra inches he packs have long convinced the ladies that he is God’s gift to womankind.

Having said that we would love to find out what would happen to you when in close confinement with two male red ass baboons in heat. Arnold Schwarzenegger needs to import a couple of these red ass baboons to gay California. At least it would help keep their minds of the recession.

  31. “Bean has told me about this very often, but he violates that advice from time to time to my utter chagrin.—Din Merican

In times like the present when everything goes south, we need some humor to help give it some lift.

    Steroids may also help.

  32. “You and I don’t have many teeth left. Tok Cik has gold teeth, gold that once belonged to dead CTs.” Bean.

Wonder if Sharizat will take me warts, gold teeth and all?

  33. Tok Cik
Sometimes you have to take a back seat and watch the traffic go by. Not the type of back seat (mini) that Bean refers to so often.

I respect the blog owners rights and decision and no offence taken. I can take as well as dish it out too.

  34. Previous blog entries are more of Shrek’s cup of tea. Of late the entries have centered around the Perak debacle and the future of UMNO and BN. The Perak debacle is important and at this point in time no one wants to claim responsibility for it neither the Sultan nor the Zombie.
Shrek was never and will never be an UMNO member. So the future and demise of UMNO is of no consequence.
PKR and PR should focus more attention in building the PKR party and the PR coalition and formulate plans on either becoming an effective opposition or capturing more state seats. With the unique Sabah and Sarawak politics and with 25% seats in Parliament, PKR will need to garner more support from these 2 states.

  35. “Wonder if Sharizat will take me warts, gold teeth and all?” Tok Cik

Sharizat like all women have a lot in common with the hurricane. They come wet, fast and furious and then leave you dry. Not even your teeth will be spared.

  36. Shrek,

You’re losing your touch. Don’t let Din Merican change you!

  37. Bean
Din didn’t change Shrek. Din changed himself when he became a PKR member. Shrek still remain critical of Che Det, Badawi, Ajib and now include Anwar. Shrek was 100% behind Anwar in 1998 but after he became leader of PKR. Shrek holds a different view of Anwar. PKR has proven to be weak with many splinter groups and some leaving PKR after fighting tooth and nail for Anwar. Some has openly expressed disappointment in Anwar’s leadership style. There must be some truth to it.
    _________
It is not possible for Anwar to please everybody. PKR has strengths and weaknesses, but we are becoming better focused and organised in recent months. We will have a new party constitution soon.–Din Merican

  38. Shrek,

Matters have become so bad that even Pak Mat, once the batman to Tok Cik, deserves his fifteen minutes of fame as a politician opposed to UMNO and its culture of corruption. There is no denying that PKR started off as a rag-tag army of sorts, of disgruntled elements from UMNO and later joined by opportunists who are out looking to make hay while the sun shines.

But we gotta give credit to where credit is due. PKR is today a viable political party despite the patchwork of policies put together as a matter of expediency. What holds the party together is the charismatic leadership of Anwar Ibrahim.

Dare I say that should something happen to Anwar Ibrahim the party would be in tatters? The coalition?? Forget that one.
