Anwar Ibrahim: Prime Demolition Target of UMNO-Barisan Nasional

Anwar Ibrahim: Prime Demolition Target of UMNO-Barisan Nasional

by Din Merican

I agree with Syed Nazri, Group Editor of  the government controlled The New Straits Times (see his article of May 19, 2009 titled “Anwar …forever victim, never villian”), that Anwar Ibrahim is “a victim”. But we differ because the Group Editor is putting a spin on behalf of Najib and UMNO-BN by saying that Anwar is seeking international and public sympathy. Nothing is further from the truth than this line of thinking.

The facts will show that since his dismissal from UMNO in 1998, Anwar has been a target of incessant attacks by the government of the day which sought and still seeks to demonise and discredit him. In fact if they can, they will deny him bail and send back to gaol (Sodomy 2) this July, 2009. What are these facts?

Dr. Mahathir and his mischief makers were able to convict him on trumped up charges. As a result, Anwar spent 6 years in Sungei Buloh in solitary confinement, only to be released in 2004. The Lingam tapes showed that the PKR Ketua Umum was a victim of a political conspiracy which was vicious, rancourous, and almost deadly (recall the Black Eye incident and the arsenic poisoning). They also launched a well orchestrated and funded anti-Anwar campaign which sought to further tarnish his image by branding him as pro-International Monetary Fund and Washington Consensus, Pro-Jew, Anti-Malay politician, and a sodomiser to boot.

All these charges were found to be baseless.  Anwar Ibrahim is not a foreign agent, but a patriot and a symbol of  courage and honour in the face of overwhelming political odds. If those of us who interested in understanding Anwar Ibrahim, then they should read Anwar’s The Asian Renaissance to know his political, economic and social agenda. The still popular book was published in 1995 when he was Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance. His ideas received the tacit support of Prime Minister Dr. Mahathir at the time.

Anwar is a reformist who is committed to the cause of freedom, democracy and justice. He advocates good governance and is a fierce adversary against corruption and abuse of power. Parti KeADILan Rakyat embodies his struggle and aspirations for an all inclusive and multiracial Malaysia. He remains committed to reform, and the rebuilding our country so that it can compete with its neighbours and hold its own in a globalised world.

His humane agenda which has the backing of his partners, PAS and DAP, is a progressive one designed to improve our national competitiveness, and ensure that our affirmative action policy is based on needs and justice for all Malaysians. Under Badawi and now Najib, the same Mahathir game plan is being implemented by UMNO-Barisan Nasional to ensure that Anwar will be stopped at the gates of Putrajaya, no matter what that would take. You can see that over the last 6 years and counting, all state assets, both physical and intellectual, have been deployed for this purpose.

Since March 2008 general elections and by-elections, the UMNO-BN have used the Police and Federal Reserve Unit, the media especially TV1, TV2 and TV3 and Utusan Malaysia, The New Straits Times and The Star, the judiciary and the civil service to spread misinformation to the voting public and suppress political opposition and civil society which are deemed to be hostile towards UMNO  and Barisan Nasional. The politics of fear and intimidation continues. In the case of Perak, even Royalty has been dragged into the rough and tumble of Najibian politics. The shameful use of the ISA to detain political activists without trial is another blemish on Malaysia’s international image.

Anwar’s physical safety is always at risk. The man himself is fearless. But his friends and colleagues have taken it upon themselves to ensure that his security is given careful attention. The same applies to Najib who ,I am sure ,is protected from harm by a elite corp of well trained commandos and police personnel. In Najib’s case, this protection is paid for by the taxpayers, whereas Anwar does not enjoy that luxury. In fact, as Leader of the Opposition, Anwar should be accorded similar protection. Who is talking about double standards?

The Anifah Aman performance before Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in the State Department in Washington recently, described by Syed Nazri as a “humdinger”, is part of a systematic and persistent campaign against Anwar Ibrahim. The fact  that Anifah made an ass of himself at the press conference is not highlighted. In stead Syed Nazri struck a complimentary note when he said that the Foreign Minister’s response to a question from one of the journalists “strikes at the very heart of the Anwar agenda”. The comedy will  be heightened when Jamaluddin Jarjis, a close political ally of Najib’s, is made our Ambassador to the United States. The two of them will make  a couple of novices in diplomacy and foreign policy and destroy whatever that is left of our image vis-a-vis the United States.

What agenda is Syed Nazri talking about? As far as I know Anwar’s political reform and economic agenda resonates well with the industrialised countries and foreign investors. There is nothing that Anifah could add to the debate. He was merely, in fact, confirming that Malaysia is in a political mess (please go back to my earlier posting where you can lock-in to the Clinton-Anifah Aman press conference on YouTube). He also rekindled interest on the Mongolian woman who was brutally murdered in Malaysia in 2006. We must thank Anifah for doing Mr. Setev Shaaribuu a great favour. In Malaysia, we are barred from mentioning the dead model and Mongolian beauty’s name.

Furthermore, the foreign media were not impressed with his remark that our judiciary is independent. All one has to do is to visit the State Department’s website  to read its annual human rights report which contains references to our record on human rights, democracy and the Rule of Law.

Thank You, MO2

  1. The NST writer should renamed himself Syed Bozo!

  2. 1….a victim of a political conspiracy …
This is hardcore, which he failed to prove until today. only perception, no evidence. Well, A LOT of things he failed to proved including Najib denial involvind the death of a mongolian waman…. how to prove when you can’t even questioned him, nor his aides. even in parliment…probably some tomatoes would landed on his face in europe one day or be charged under international law since our media can only tell nice stories about him, especially his pink lips.

2….recall the Black Eye incident and the arsenic poisoning… it was provoked and the Rahim Nor was charged. Arsenic poisoning was false accusation. independent Lab tests confirmed no arsenic as claimed by anwar( so he lied, hence tried to play victim ) I see he is alive and well today….. oops not really.. Its was just one of Anwar’s drama to play the emotions of his supporter. Bravo.
re ….o well arsenic poisoning is a slow death, just like if your wife let you drink battery water daily, you can end up with enlarged heart and suffer slow death, now anwar is suffering from severe back ache and wearing a type of corset to straighten up his body, it could be probably toxin in his kidney, i just wonder how crazy it is to sodomized someone , when straight sex is an agony. only umno-bn has lurid vision of anwar as a stud.

But the best drama of playing victim was when he ran to the turkish embassy claiming a death threat, and later claim was just visiting ( such early hours?) or whatever…. So what death threat really ? THERE IS NO LOGIC AT ALL. It shows desperate mind. yes, desperate if you have a wife and 5 kids n already wasted 6 years in sg.buluh. another attempt would be suicidal to his kids. may be we never had a father that had been through such ordeal, imagine his kids..
whole of Malaysia knows who is the Malaysia King of Drama…
more and more people are distrusting Anwar today, especially after the biggest lie of 916.
People are sick of the politicking of Anwar which has not been productive to the Nation. And Najib decision not to contest in Penanti sums up. i m a bit confused now …what m i talking about, najib, anwar lu sapa.. gua mickey, bini gua mini..
    ___________
mickey, you could be right or wrong but at least I know where you are coming from. You belong to the group of voters who have been voting UMNO-BN for the last 50+ years and have yet to learn a lesson or two. —Din Merican

  3. Why the necessity to seek outside recognition of his political plight when he (DSAI) clearly has all the backing from his countrymen
It is they who have lost all political wits to match him.
Ask any trained expert – masters in the so called mind games of ‘reverse psychology’ who presently has the cutting edge.

The govt and its henchmen bite their tongues each time they blabber. Soon they’ll bite the dust.

  4. Couldn’t disagree with you more, strategically speaking that is. Wrote a similar piece, perhaps may be not as cogent as yours, on the MI website about 3 weeks ago but whole darn piece disappeared into virtual abyss. Wonder if I am the only one with such problem? And not just once.

  5. Hi Mickey, yes our people are sick of the politicking, but you need to be corrected, we are totally sick of the politicking by UMNO, MCA, MIC, GERAKAN and all the bozos from BN.

Anwar on the other hand, is the light at the end of the tunnel for a majority of our people, we need his kind of thinking to make our country one that we can be proud of.

On the other Mickey, perhaps you are really proud of a PM that is linked to ass banging mistresses, C4 blowups, massive swiss bank accounts, incredible houses in London, Perth, Sydney and Paris, fleet of expensive cars, and all those assets that a simple dumb accountant can trace and cannot figure out how to justify from their tax records.

Mickey, whether or not Anwar is the King of Drama, we dont care. What we want is a leader that cuts through all our racial delineation, cuts through religion with the focus of bring prosperity, harmony and unity to our country. So, far ANWAR happens to be the only leader willing to take the hurt and trash heaped at him from UMNO. I personally will not be capable to take that kind of suffering and would have succumbed to the bribes that would be offered. Anwar deserves our outright support, unless there is an alternative, or unless we are going all out to shortchange our children and the future of our country. To me, it seems that UMNO have no idea what common good means, they are simply too corrupt beyond redemption to understand the meaning of public adminstration. The decision by UMNO on Penanti has nothing to do with people’s perception of Anwar, how you came up with such conclusion is simply absurd. Absurd, stupidity, greed is how we perceive BN, and our government and somehow, we dont seem to have a shortage of supporters of BN no matter how stupid, corrupt and dangerous they are to the future of our country.

  6. mr din i read this post of yours with great interest but half way through i got quite amused . why? well mr din , i dont think there is reason for concern . let me explain why ?

first, mr din , you mentioned the deployment of ” all state assets both physical and intellectual ” for this purpose of obliterating anwar ibrahim’s stature in malaysian and international politics . come on mr. din , do you really have all that confidence in the abilities of ” all the state assets both physical and intellectual ” of the government? honestly i dont and i think if you do , then it must be an attempt to delude your readers .

if you have’nt noticed mr din , there is more brawn then brain amongst the so called ” intellectuals ” and as for the physical assets ( correct me if i am wrong but ) i don’t think they even know how to use it . as for the brawn , the traffic jams the police cause all over town just to prevent a small group of peaceful demonstraters from delivering a petition to the KING , or sending a team of balaclev clad commandos with uzi or m16 machine guns just to pick up anwar ibrahim does not reflect as good intellectual ability, if u ask me mr din.

similarly , the recent call by najib for members of the private sector to help enhance the performance of the public sector itself suggests that najib himself has no confidence in the ” intellectual assets ” of the public sector. and as for our new foreign minister , his performance in washington is enough to tell you that he is no intellect. in fact , his performance there only confirmed him as a low form of a human being – more like a worm or vermin.

so mr. din , i dont think you or anwar have anything to be concerned about vis a vis the so called ” deployment of state assets both physical and intellectual ” and for this you have to thank dr mahathir mohamad and his ” malay supremacist ” policies because this ensured mediocrity in the public sector.

and as for JJ, he is but a butt pincher. so if he goes to washington , i am sure he will be there to pick the best butts and have them ready for ” our man ” to pinch when he visits washington or new york to address the united nations general assembly.
    _________
marissa, do not underestimate the UMNO-BN people. They do have smart people including intellectuals, but these people are screwed up because of greed and lack of ethical considerations with respect to whatever they do. They are clever in a crooked way. We are the stupid ones for voting them year in year out for the last 50+ years.—Din Merican

  7. WELL WRITTEN JAMES …
    BRAVO

  8. hey mickey….dont talk like mickey mouse okey..

open ur eyes plz..Anwar is still the best man to lead our country..!

Young Malaysians will make sure this happen in the coming general election..Vote for Anwar….!!

  9. Well said. Who is Anifah compared to Anwar?. Anifah pls look at Sabah, after 50 years under BN rules what it has achieved, the poorest state in Malaysia..

  10. Pareto’s law – the 80:20 rule. First we have to agree that no sinlge politician is perfect without blemishes. If we apply Pareto’s law, who do we support? A person who is 80% rotten and 20% good OR a person who is 80% good and 20% rotten?

  11. James Chua,

the simple answer is, maybe the opposition is not doing enough to gain the support of the majority.
Considering it has been 50 years…a very long time, indeed.

And whatever devastating information that you may have or in possession against the current PM, you will need to establish that in concrete, and forward that to Anwar Ibrahim so he can put that in good use, and make the accusation in the same court that released Anwar. This will be very good for Anwar in order for him to take over Najib’s seat.

Do you need another 50 years?

  12. Anwar will always feel victimised as he was assaulted and thrown in jail on trumped up charges. I have no doubt Syed Nazri will feell the same if he had suffered the same fate.

To rub salt into Anwar’s wound, so to speak, is the fact that the key people involved such as Mahathir is now enjoying his retirement at taxpayers’ expense while the likes of Augustine Paul, Patail and Musa were all promoted. So where is the justice?

  13. Come on Bro. Din !!! Don’t over do it and got carried away in describing DSAI. That’s the least we expect from you based on your credentials.
    _________
ariffdanial, me over the top on DSAI? Wrong. I try to paint a more accurate picture of the man based on my reading of his writings and speeches, my seeing him in action at political rallies and ceramahs, and my hours of conversation with him. He is a changed person and has purged himself of UMNO habits and frame of mind. He is as political as one can be, but unlike those pols in UMNO, MCA and MIC he acts with conviction based on his fundamental beliefs about freedom, democracy. Right now, he is the best we have got and no one in UMNO comes close to him by comparison.—Din Merican

  14. “Furthermore, the foreign media were not impressed with his remark that our judiciary is independent. All one has to do is to visit the State Department’s website to read its annual human rights report which contains references to our record on human rights, democracy and the Rule of Law.”

The journalists, except for the one who introduced the issue about the trial of Anwar Ibrahim being “politically motivated” seemed uninterested and were using the conference as an opportunity to explore the administration’s motives and policies regarding North Korea and in other parts of the world.

For a while Malaysia appeared as a blip in the radar screen of international politics simply because Mahathir romped all over the world ranting and fuming at the way he was being treated outside the Muslim world – much like a schoolboy looking for attention from his teacher by kicking up a fuss.

Face it. Malaysia is a third world country. Its political leaders are like red ass baboons.

  15. Hahaha, bravo marissa apadurai, Din’s at a loss for words!
Btw, we don’t use uzi’s here – not halal, only kosher – they were Heckler-Koch MPs. Small difference, same threat level.
Also thanks Bean for putting us back in our place in real world, under the ass of wonderful red ass baboons… Keep reminding us will you.
    Cheers

  16. Yes, Menyalak-er.

Click on the link and you’ll see Najib’s red ass. Dare I say Anwar is right behind?

  17. menyalak-er,

it is nice sharing thoughts and ideas but even nicer when my thoughts and ideas are appreciated . so let me show my appreciation by saying terima kasih. and as for din , i dont think he will be at a loss for words. he has too many .

    thanks again,

    marissa a.

  18. Anifah just got his new life after being appointed full minister. Now is the time to paise his boss and willing to shoot at boss’s opponent.

  19. mr din ,

thanks for your short note below my comment . it is appreciated but i am not convinced. the performance of the IGP , the ATTORNEY GENERAL , the people on the BENCH, the state secretary and the ” illegal ” adviser of perak individually or collectively don’t contribute towards confidence .

if there are advisers from outside the public sector , then even they are rubbish , if meaning is read from the performance of the umno-barisan coalition since the march 8th, 2008 elections. infact , if i may say so , it has been disastrous for them .

and as for me mr din , i have confidence in ” our ” team . our team is like DAVID . IT IS ONLY A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE , WE TOGETHER , HUMBLE THE UMNO – BARISAN COALITION like DAVID did with GOLIATH.

SO MR DIN , if i may suggest , you too should show and have greater confidence in ” our ” team.

    thanks again mr din,

    marissa a.

  20. marissa a,

I am a member of the team and believe in PKR-PR’s quest for freedom, democracy and justice. But change is challenging, albeit slow, but we will get there for all our sakes.–Din Merican

  21. marissa a,

Words are not all that I have (to quote The Bee Gees). I believe in action, that speaks louder than words. For this reason, I am political activist. There is a difference between being an activist and a politician. You know that. I am just a backroom person. Thanks for your comments.—Din Merican

  22. mr din ,

in my mind ” back room persons ” are the brains behind the so called ” front room persons “. so it means you are in a very enviable position. so mr. din , i don’t know if i am good enough for the ” back room “, but if there is anything i can do to help strengthen the ” back room ” i would be glad to help.

a wave needs to be built that would sweep the nation not only to accomodate ” change ” but also to prepare our nation and its people for the challenges that come with this ” change ” . this receptiveness if created will enable ” change ” to be put in place with greater ease enabling the new ” MALAYSIAN DAWN ” to settle in with greater ease. but to achieve this, the PKR-PR WAKIL RA’AYATS and its activists , must be equipped to be the agents for change . how do we do this ? any ideas mr. din?

    marissa a.

  23. Din Merican a political activist? Hmm! I prefer having him be an outright politician! Why i am ask?
Well for one , he takes insults in a particular way that the insults sound sweet. Another noticeable trait is that he is slow in anger when provoke and mind you , he is Malay and with all that ketuanan melayu mumbo jumbo its a compliment in its self
He is also decent as what Bean who knows him claimed and coming from Bean who thinks baboons make better politicians than Umno-putras it does carry some weight.

  24. ‘He is changed man’. I sincerely hope you are correct. The fact that DSAI’s past deeds during his hey days tagging with Mahathir in slaughtering T Razaliegh/ Ghaffar tag team in the MKT election made me nervous. Very crude and vicious.

Are sure you that DSAI is the best we got ?Not to flatter you, but if I have my way , I would like to have you running the country. A real technocrat. No excess baggage . No personal agenda and so on….
