What Happened in Perak on May 7, 2009: Watch the Video and form your own conclusion

What many Malaysians in Ipoh witnessed as a spectacle in the Dewan Undangan Negeri on May & is now related to us by Perak DAP Secretary Nga Kor Ming in this video clip. Perak is becoming a failed state because the Prime Minister initiated a political move that he could now no longer control. For those who do not understand Bahasa Malaysia, please move the video pointer to 2.40.
The Police took the law into their own hands and acted shamelessly in favour of Zambry and his gang. Can you now blame the Malaysian Bar Council for demanding the resignation of the Inspector-General of Police and the Home Affairs Minister, Kerismuddin. —Din Merican
Looks like a gun, feels like a gun, must be a toy gun.

When all the institutions of state and all its power is brought to bear on the political opposition, when law is not only seen as the weapon of choice by those in power when they no longer have any choice, when parliamentary and state proceedings are not much more than a play staged for the world to see, it is time to dismantle such institutions and call Malaysian democracy by its real name.

Brother, reference your story above and this attached statement -
“in this video clip. Perak is becoming a failed state because the Prime Minister initiated a political move that he could now no longer control. For those who do not understand Bahasa Malaysia, please move the video pointer to 2.40.”.
I beg to disagree with you on the statement as I would rather state that it is not that the PM can no longer control the situation BUT it is more a fact that he DOES NOT WANT the situation to go on as it will probably give the govt reason to one day declare an Emergency or martial law – once that is done, where is the need for the State Assembly or the Parliament?
The bloke cannot be trusted whatsoever!!!
Anak Pulau Pinang - May 18, 2009 at 7:26 pm
Anak Pulau Pinang,
I note your disagreement with my view. Najib has, in fact, made a strategic error by not knowing his end game and in underestimating the capacity of Pakatan Rakyat to make an Alamo like stand on the issue of democracy in Perak.
Anwar Ibrahim and his colleagues understood the mood of the people and swam with the tide, rather than go against it. Malaysians are increasingly assertive in the political sense and will not allow anyone to bamboozle them. In my opinion, Najib is completely out of touch.—Din Merican

“Anwar Ibrahim and his colleagues understood the mood of the people and swam with the tide, rather than go against it.”
That however is not leadership. Real leadership is when you do what you believe is good for the people rather than go along with the people even though it is not good for them. Real leadership needs courage.

It needs vision.

“Commercial break”. Something nice to share with all of you here…. Our politicians could get some good advice from this…
(I’m a new reader to this blog, starting just a few days ago..) Great blog, Din. (Sorry, not sure how you’d like to be addressed).

Well, both sides has different story.

Since DAP claim to have the evidence, they might as well make a police report, with the purported photo evidence, identifying the person with the gun.
Easy. has it been done? No?
Btw. our friend seems to know a lot about Zimbabwe. maybe he’s from zimbabwe?

Mickey,
One does not have to be a Zimbabwean to know about that failed economy. Just google and have an open mind. Just don’t be like the proverbial ostrich which buries its head in the sand. Are you someone with an ostrich mentality, given your “UMNO-BN no matter what” kind of a guy?–Din Merican

We thank you, Mickey for posting that video on this blog. It is easy to be partisan in one’s approach. It is a lot more difficult to be fair and balance. Let viewers decide.
You should therefore post another video that depicts from another angle what really happened on that fateful day that many have come to call “A Day of Infamy”. As I watched the video but by not listening to what the commentator had to say I come to the opposite conclusion.
What I see is democracy in the working – not quite at its worst.
Power appears to have been usurped through unconstitutional means and the result is an illegitimate government. Scenes like this are not uncommon in third world countries – and Malaysia appears to be exactly that judging from what you see. Legitimate avenues of protest are being suppressed and legal redress near impossible.
The only chance of success is through the use of extra-legal and extra-constitutional means.
PR assemblymen and women appear restrained. No fist fights among law makers like you see in some of the other countries. The U.S. which has a long history has gone through a similar phase not too long ago and has had its share.
But one thing I find disturbing is the presence of firearms. This does not bode well for the future of a fledgling democracy like Malaysia’s. I think this country is well on its way to another declaration of emergency like we saw under Tun Razak when Parliament would be suspended to allow for the consolidation of power at the center.
