  1. Leaders from PAS and PKR have found new skills when playing to the gallery (read: non-Malay gallery). They seem to have acquired a flair for ‘foreign’ language and have added new phrases and new skills to their tool box with the kind of enthusiasm a kid shows when entering a candy shop.

Lee Kuan Yew knew early in his political career that control, understanding and use of Bahasa Indonesia or Bahasa Melayu is crucial to a politician of a country often represented by a red dot, at the epicenter of the Malay archipelago – a sea of green rather than red. The reverse appears true for our leaders today. They suddenly appear to discover the red dot in themselves like as if it was never there.

I find this a disturbing trend among politicians in both camps. They appeal to our baser instincts as a people who look different and appear different and then say to them that they are no different than the guy next to them.

It is at the height of hypocrisy to now say “Anak Cina adalah anak saya, anak India adalah anak saya dan anak Iban adalah anak saya”. Don’t we have adoption laws?

Where we these people for the last fifty years? Were they not walking our streets, selling bak ku teh, char koay teow, constructing our buildings, running our whorehouses, greasing the hands of our policemen and politicians, and generally helping to build up this country? Were they not building our railroads, tapping our rubber trees, lending money and living off the misery of others , selling roti canai and curry kepala ikan and lottery tickets, delivering our newspapers, attending to the sick, delivering justice to those who could afford their fees (win or lose), guarding our banks? What language were they using? Russian?
