A Day of Referendum (April 7, 2009)in Batang Ai, Bukit Selambau, and Bukit Gantang: Go out early and vote with your heart and mind for political change
Phnom Penh, Cambodia
April 7, 2009
Fellow Malaysians and Voters in Batang Ai, Bukit Selambau and Bukit Gantang,
I send you my sincere salams from Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia, where my wife, Dr. Kamsiah (picture with Dr. Surin Pitsuwan, ASEAN Secretary-General and H.E. Ahmad Yahya, RGC Secretary of State for Social Affairs, War Veterans And Youth Rehabilitation) and and I are attending the conference organised by Asia Economic Forum of the University of Cambodia from April 6-7, 2009. The theme of this year’s conference is “Asia’s Challenges and Opportunities in a Time of Global Economic and Financial Crises”.
The gathering of political leaders, policy makers and officials of the Royal Government of Cambodia, economists, political scientists and analysts, and civil society personalities was officially opened yesterday by the Prime Minister of Cambodia, His Excellency Samdech Hun Sen who delivered a very inspiring Keynote Address.
What came out of Hun Sen’s address is loud and clear and that is, leaders must lead and care for, and be in touch with the people . Managing the economy must take top priority at this critical time. Overcoming economic hardship and social dislocations must be above politics. This basically means that we must get our politics right if we are to solve our socio-economic problems arising from this global economic crisis, build our national resilience; in the world of globalisation, we must cooperate as no nation, not even the United States, can deal with the impending crisis singlehandedly.
So, no country will be spared the consequences of this massive economic tsunami, and we need to cooperate internally, regionally and globally, he added.
Samdech Hun Sen’s message resonated with the participants and set the tone for yesterday’s deliberations. The new ASEAN Secretary-General, Dr. Surin Pitsuwan, also focussed on international cooperation, emphasing the importance of ASEAN’s role in building partnerships with the Group-20 nations to tackle this global crisis. Dr. Surin told his audience that the fact that 6 0f the Group of 20 are from Asia is ample proof that Asia’s influence in geo-politics and economics is recognised. ASEAN was also invited to the April 2 Summit in London on April 2, 2009. UNDP representatives and others including myself were emphatic about good governance, and the need to restore public trust in government and institutions of governance, and banks and other financial institutions.
Throughout yesterday, my mind was also pre-occupied thinking with the by-elections in our cpuntry on April 7. Campaigns have ended and having listened to both sides of the political divide, you, dear friends and fellow Malaysians in Batang Ai (Sarawak), Bukit Selambau (Kedah) and Bukit Gantang (Perak) must turn out in full force and vote with care.
Your vote counts as we seek to make political progress toward freedom, democracy and justice. We must reject the incompetent, corrupt and self-serving UMNO-Barisan Nasional, and vote in candidates from Pakatan Rakyat.
You must reject Mahathirism and crony capitalism; you must send a strong message to the present Prime Minister, Najib Tun Razak that we want our freedom back. His economic policies and stimulus package to revive our economic future will fail and you must reject his politics of repression and deceit. Najib must also know that we cannot be bought with money and his “One-Malaysia” will flounder because UMNO is a race based party and so are its coalition partners.
We believe in change and we know that we must change and our leaders reconnect with people. Actions speak louder than words and although the Badawi era of NATO (No Action Talk Only) is gone, the culture of corrupt governance by UMNO-Barisan remains entrenched.
Vote Pakatan Rakyat as together we can build a better Malaysia. Reject the status quo since it is a millstone around our country’s neck. April 7 is a day of referendum and remember, it is now in your hands from friends and fellow Malaysians in Batang Ai, Bukit Selambau and Bukit Gantang. You can do it; in your hands is our agenda for change and our Harapam Baru untuk Malaysia . VOTE FOR CHANGE.—Din Merican
Not sure what you mean by getting your freedom back. You felt repressed? I pity you.
And how will you know his economic stimulus plan will fail? If you know the answer why not share it with the rest of Malaysian?
Mahathirism has brought very significant progress that has survived two recession period. It has increased our GDP percapita and has provided wealth to ALL races. We are what we are today because of Mahathirism, not communism, perestroika, socialism or whatever.
And speaking of cronyism, then you must reject your boss, Anwar since he was the one took the practise while holding the finance portfolio.
Crucially Din, what exactly Pakatan is offering or changing is still a mystery.
We have looked at the five states, nothing really changed, if not getting worst.

tourman,
I don’t remember getting raped by Mahathir. I think it was more of good sex!
and good times….
you should learn how to enjoy sex, frigid!
Unless you enjoy liberal anal sex, you know who to call….
I’m kind of traditional…
mickey - April 7, 2009 at 9:10 pm
“I think it was more of good sex!and good times”…mickey.
Agreed, Yes good sex and good times for rapists.
Guan Eng was jailed when one rapist screwed bohsia and now wanted to come back for more….
tean - April 7, 2009 at 9:39 pm
Tean,
Since when one have to rape a bohsia?
Sex with Bohsia is always consensus, provided you pay. Anyway that guy is not going anywhere and so will the rest of the corrupt bunch. I don’t like him either.
Do you want to know who had really good sex ( both literally and analogy ) during Mahathirism? Yes, mr 16 september….
You see, in BN, we can reject and criticize our no.1, no.2 and wrong doers ( have to admit some are still in – there will be some overhaulin’ soon )
But I don’t see that in PR which try to defend clear offenders, and worst still , try to blame BN on the subjectivity of conspiracy, and playing victim ( the classic one is the turkish embassy saga )
But I do admire PR energy during elections. This is something BN is taking notice ( this is why we are rejecting the sleepy no.1 )
mickey - April 7, 2009 at 10:40 pm
mickey,
If that is so hope he can serve you more.

“I don’t remember getting raped by Mahathir.”
There is a difference between a master and an apprentice. A master does it with a finesse, so much you don’t realize he is on top of you. Mahathir has been on top for some twenty years and yet you feel he is on your side. With Abdullah Badawi, he was on top but fell asleep on the job. With Najib, it is going to be a rough ride.
