Elizabeth Wong: Kenyataan Akhbar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim, Menteri Besar, Selangor Darul Ehsan

KENYATAAN AKHBAR
16hb FEBRUARI 2009
KERAJAAN NEGERI SELANGOR PERTAHAN
YB ELIZABETH WONG

  1. A national press conference and a government statement?? This is like creating a mountain out of a mole hill, is it not? Even in Malaysia.

Recently, a candidate for the vice presidency of a country long regarded as a beacon of democracy of the free world has her pictures pasted all over the internet as a result of some adventurous soul or souls breaking into her e-mails. The attention given to it lasted for a day as it made its rounds over the media.

There are more important things for the PR government of the state of Selangor to do than coming to the defense of someone who has not been particularly discriminating in her choice of company she keeps. I say this not out of disrespect for the victim. She is a victim.

It could happen to anyone. Is the PR state government supposed to issue statements like this from now on? It is a distraction. The PR government in Selangor is not smart in playing right into the hands of the opposition. BN is in the opposition in Selangor, is it not??

  2. It is good that this incident happened. Don’t get me wrong – I am not applauding the misfortune visited upon Elizabeth.
Just want to point the fact that various such incidents have been reported and highlighted in the local MSM without much fanfare – but now that a politician ,especially an opposition politician is involved, the media’s machinery is put on overdrive !
It will be interesting if the whole thing ends up in court because it is obviously an intrusion of privacy and even public servants and celebrities are entitled to privacy rights because surely Elizabeth did not give permission for her images to be splashed to the world at large !!!
So, it will be interesting to see how noble our courts are in its pursuit of truth and justice !!!

  3. Lets see how the cops handles this case

  4. Whatever the outcome of the court’s decision, should the case ends up there, is immaterial because at the end of the day , Justice if not common sense will prevail and the people’s court will adjudge that Elizabeth Wong has been a victim of low life political intent which further underscores the erosion of morals and ethics in our political landscape !!!

  5. The print media is in crisis as more resort to the internet for news. This will be a great boost to declining sales. If you sympathise with her, do not pick papers up at newstands. But guess who will? Sometimes that’s how public issues are decided.

Taking it to court will only embrass the victim further. The print media would have their share in the sun, and the witness his fifteen minutes of fame.

  6. “Lets see how the cops handles this case”

What crime or crimes have been committed?

  7. It is very unfortunate that this happens to capable people who can lead the state adminstration. The circulation of YB Elizabeth photo is an act of an animal being. Truly, an invasion of privacy. Have you ever sleep half naked or with just underwear before? I am sure many adult or married couple do. It is not abnormal.

Our Malaysia politics is becoming inmature and inconsistent with the rule of Law. If we are not sure of the Law, we should refer it to the text. What happens in Perak state is a biggest joke about our country’s judiciary system. Remember, nobody is above the Law.

I read and agreed with UMNO veteran, YB Ku Li. And I am sad to say that Pak Lah have left ‘no legacy’ for himself. Truly, I cannot respect him as PM. He has just not managed this country well but creates ‘stupidity’. Looks at event the Ruler vs. UMNO. The way how BN takes over Perak from PR is ‘wake-up’ call for foreign investor. Only those corrupted investors like to do business here in a ‘cowboy country with a cowboy law’.

My wish again that this country should be reformed in all government sectors. Let us pray that we can find better leader in near future.

Yes, I agree Ku Li is a politician has been and cannot be entrusted to lead our country. At this time, Anwar Ibrahim is our leader who will rediscover the glory of Malaysia.—Din Merican

  8. If I were the ADUN involved, I would resign to avoid a scandal and not involve the Pakatan government.

  9. As a duly elected representative of the people, sworn to do the work of the people, in the event something like this interferes with my work I would do the right thing i.e. resign.

  10. “Meanwhile Wong said she is receiving lots of support from friends, colleagues and members of her constituency. “I wish to thank them for their concern, support and encouragement.” She added that her family was standing behind her and she appealed to the media to give her and her family some breathing space. Wong said she will continue to carry out her duties.” Malaysian Insider

She cannot be pressured to resign as she has not committed any crime. There is no allegation of crime against her. The photo was taken some time ago. We all do foolish things when we were young. She’s no exception.

However, she should put the interest of the people she represents first and not her own. How is she going to do the work of the people and carry out her oath of office faithfully knowing that she could be the subject of blackmail. There could be more photographs out there. Further what message are we sending to the others and to the people they serve??

PR leadership would become vulnerable to all sorts of blackmail. There may be other ADUNs facing the same predicament that we do not know yet.

She should resign. She has taken an oath of office that she can no longer hope to carry out faithfully.

  11. Nope, she shouldn’t resign because that will embolden these sub-primates. When the chips are down, do the ‘unexpected’ – attack their high ‘moral’ or rather their despicable ‘immoral’ ground.
The dirt they have is a zillion times more ‘potent’ than this ‘storm in a teacup’, with due respect to Elizabeth.
I for one, would still like to see a real RMN “Scorpene” with second hand “FangCheng” Diesel engine and dud ww 2 torpedoes!
“Runtuhing” School/Palace of Justice roofs, leaking parliments, P.M. stuck in lifts, etc, ad nauseum.
But, i shudder at the thought of seeing Mdm Hydra Lumpiolus sleeping naked – mortal that i am!

  12. O my fellow Malaysians ! In Europe, this whole episode would have been stale news by now! Remember Carla Bruni, the wife of President Sarkozy ? She was also put in a similar spot, but then, I forgot that this is Boleh-land ! :-)

  13. If this happens in a developed western democracy, a person in her position would have resigned to save her party. This is assuming that there is something scandalous about those photographs. Are there any more such photographs which could be a lot worse and could be used later to blackmail her? This is the issue that should worry the party’s leadership most.

Wasn’t this the same ADUN caught ferrying her grandmother and her maid to the wet market in a government car not too long ago – and caused a stir? PR candidates had contested the elections promising a clean government, distinguishing themselves from their political opponents that way. PR candidates never failed to raise the issue of abuse of government property by BN politicians during the campaign. They raised the bar for themselves. Nobody did it for them. Now it is only fair that they live up to those expectations.

Contrary to most of the comments on PR friendly political blogs, this has little to do with issues on morals and invasion of privacy. These are subject matter for private litigation and has less to do with public office.

Instead it has everything to do with being blackmailed. PR candidates should be made to answer queries about their private lives and held to high standards expected of public servants.

It is a matter for the PR leadership to consider. PR has nothing to lose. There are other equally capable, honest and hardworking candidates waiting to take her place. Why deny them of the opportunity?

  14. Remember the Profumo scandal of the 60s. It brought down a government.
