| Barisan Nasional Permatang Pauh candidate Arif Shah Omar Shah has stopped pursuing his PhD degree after questions were raised over his academic credentials.
“The PhD is not recognised, so I have quit. I am finding a paper that is recognised,” he told Malaysiakini when met at the sidelines of his election campaign on Tuesday.
An English daily had carried a profile of Arif Shah’s educational background, reporting that he was a diploma holder in civil engineering and currently pursuing a PhD at the ‘Edison University of Technology (off-campus programme). The report sparked debate among bloggers who could not verify his academic credentials as they could not find his university name on the Internet. The 52-year-old Seberang Jaya state assemblyperson clarified the university should be ‘Edision University of Technology’, a university registered in the British Virgin Islands offering distance learning courses. After checking the Internet and a local industry expert, Malaysiakini found the university has been accused of being a bogus diploma mill. The local expert, who asked for anonymity, pointed out that the address of the university’s international distance learning centre is shared by hundreds of other companies. It is believed the address belongs to a company secretary. “It is a rare practice for a university to list its company secretary’s address, what more it is registered in the British Virgin Islands,” said the expert.
Apart from that, the only accreditation given to the university came from the World Association of Universities and Colleges (WAUC), according to the university’s website. WAUC is a global accreditation association founded to establish and promote global standards in higher education among colleges and universities worldwide. However, the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board has listed WAUC as a ‘fraudulent or unrecognised accreditor’, claiming it could be working hand in hand with institutions offering fraudulent or substandard degrees. An American students’ newspaper, the Daily Iowan also reported that WAUC had been sued by University of California in 1999 for breach of contract and fraud. The University of California claims to have been duped into becoming a WAUC member. source:www.malaysiakini.com |
He was asked to respond to questions raised on the Internet, asking how he could pursue a doctorate degree when he possessed only a diploma and no other intermediating qualification.
According to the expert, the islands, which are located in Carribean to the east of Puerto Rico, are known as a centre for the registration for more than half a million offshore companies.

A Phd program is not a walk in the park. Malaysians are always duped into such scams because they want qualifications to boost their image. I notice that some Malaysians with honoris causa Phds call themselves “Dr”. This is not done anywhere else in the world.
I only know one way to get a Phd and that is by slogging for it. I wonder why Arif is so keen to have a Phd?

It’s either Dato Arif Shah were tricked by the university or he already knew about this from the very beginning.
If he really wanna pursue a phd, then he should some better and more reliable tertiary institution.

I mean no disrespect, but somehow I think that PhDs are over-rated. There are some people who think that they can get the PhD simply by spending money to take the course.
We have this inbuilt thing about respecting people who hold higher qualifications. Thing is, sometimes it takes only a few minutes of discussion with these people and you realise that they only know their stuff from the text book, and can’t even apply it to everyday life.
But like I said, no disrespect for the real PhD holders who truly deserve it.

There is absolutely no reason for MPs or anyone to get a PhD unless they want to be in academia.

Like most of the BN MPs, this is a good example of a person of no character. A cheat, a crook, a liar etc. etc. Just not worth writing about.

What does it take to get a Doctor of Love? Dr Bean, any clues?
Doctors are in love, most times. They are just not of love. Nurses too, are in love. We, the patients just get sicker and sicker. Dr Mahathir is absent-minded. He’s not even in love, unless he can have total recall.
Funny, if you have a Doctorate of Love, it probably will cost you nothing. You’d probably have a lot of gains. But there is a downside, too, like most things. In this love thing, you’ll probably get your heart chewed out. That being the case, it’s probably just a bachelors.
I suppose we can get a masters if we “mengasihi lagi menyayangi”. If you’re a Doctor, you “terima kasih”, you tidak kasih “kasih atau sayang”!
Anyway, “terima kasih” semua!

It would be better for Umno Arif Shan to go for a
sodomy specialist and get the DR instead of a PHD.
He may be this first in world and put Bolehland
in History.

Salak says,
“If you’re a Doctor, you “terima kasih”, you tidak kasih “kasih atau sayang!”
My secretary used to be a lass by the name of “Sayang”. How fortunate to come to office and call your secretary “Sayang”
Mr Bean - August 22, 2008 at 1:09 pm
I was caught in a situation of close proximity with my secretary and dropped my doctorate along with my pants!:)
I’m now just a plain Mr. Bean.
Mr Bean - August 22, 2008 at 1:15 pm
Is he so stupid not knowing his PhD is not recognised, yet pursue the study until someone question his academic credentials?
If not for this PP by-election, the Rakyat might as well be conned by this BN crook!
tunglang - August 22, 2008 at 1:47 pm
See how greedy these Umno fellas are. They think money can buy them anything, including a PhD. And today this monkey is a candidate in a by-election. More reason why we should dump this crooked fella.

This reminds me of another bogus Ph.D holder, not too long ago, the now retired Datuk Bandar (Mayor) Y Bhg Tan Sri Dato’ Elyas Omar. Didn’t he then use Ph.D before his name??
Mr Bean - August 22, 2008 at 3:50 pm
ooops Dr before his name
Mr Bean - August 22, 2008 at 3:51 pm
i love malaysians and their long title which for all its worth sounds like this
Tan Tun Sri Datuk Seri Tin Seri Tengku Doktor Yang Amat Berbahagia ….. Encik Ariff yang masih tak ariff
wei the introducer will probably suffer from dementia reading out a title that never carried any value in da first place
but then again thats malaysia folks … now i understand why our Agung refused to give titles this year in da first place
cheers

Arif Shah a/l Omar Shah need not go far to seek a PhD. He should just sign up with Malaysia’s own Open University. Even a SPM dropout can get a degree. Open University aims to provide everyone in Malaysia an opportunity to get a degree. 10-4
