Din Ahmad’s Comments on Merican-Netto Article
Dear Friends, Associates and Fellow Bloggers,
The comments by Din Ahmad merit separate treatment since they contain views and ideas which should be seriously discussed by all Malaysians who visit this blog.
Anwar talks about transformational change not political plumbing or piecemeal changes which in essence mean business as usual. We must be aware that there are reactionary forces led by former Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir , which are keen to install a puppet who is now a trojan horse in Badawi’s camp and who will be subservient to their cause.
This is a dangerous development, if it continues unnoticed, because our politics could revert to the era of Tun Razak’s “Democracy without Consensus” (National Operations Council rule) post 1969 racial riots when the Tunku was forced to resign by a palace coup engineered by the UMNO Young Turks (which included Dr. Mahathir and Musa Hitam). They blamed the Tunku for the poor performance of the Alliance Party in the 1969 General Elections and for his failure to help the Malays. Dr.Mahathir wrote his famous “step down” letter to the Tunku. Race riots ensued, giving Tun Razak the chance to declare a state of emergency and suspend democracy.
While I may be alarmist at this stage in thinking the unthinkable, the signs are already before us. Mukhriz has written to Badawi to ask the latter to resign. Najib is waiting in the wings to seize the moment while reactionary forces in UMNO are working towards ensuring Badawi’s political demise, the sooner the better.
At this juncture, both Badawi and Najib, and UMNO are united in common cause, and that is to prevent Pakatan Rakyat’s Anwar Ibrahim from becoming our next Prime Minister. I would suggest we also think of the role of the Royal Malaysian Police under Musa Hassan and the Special Branch and be ever watchful. The recent attempt to disrupt a private function at Kelab Sultan Sultan Sulaiman on April 14, 2008 to celebrate Anwar’s freedom could be the harbinger of things to come.
My good friend, Yahaya Ismail, has just published his latest book, Tsunami Politik Anti Pak Lah, in which he said (page 75):
The above statement applies to all those who had a big hand in “kezaliman” towards Malaysia’s Rajawali, Anwar Ibrahim. Let justice and economic equity return to our wonderful country—Din Merican
Dear Din and Terence,
This year, 2008, has shown to be a year of change. Most, if not all, countries having their general elections this year, showed dramatic changes in their results. The March 8 victorious day by Pakatan Rakyat signifies a fundamental shift in the thinking of the Malaysian public. Many may say its just a warning for Barisan. Many more may be saying it’s the start of a new era. It’s the start of an era of a political shift which is very significant. The importance of this shift is that it will and should be followed by “economic equality”.
Paul Krugman, in his book, The Conscience of a Liberal, said “Can the political environment really be that decisive in determining economic inequality ? It sounds like economic heresy, but a growing body of research suggests it can.” He then continued to show four evidences of why political liberalization shall be followed by economic equality.
In short, political liberalization in our country, which March 8, 2008 became a significant date, is so far our surest bet for economic equity for the people. Since the last 20 years or so, our country have been moving very rapidly in the direction of economic plutocracy. This is now reflected in our economic indicators – slow growth, small FDIs, corruption, cronyism and major concentration of wealth in the hands of selected few. The wealth belonging to the people have been taken away in very systematic and well planned manner. Privatizations, negotiated contracts and out of place exclusivities became the main mechanism of wealth transfer.
The democratization of our politics needs to now be translated into democratization of our economy.. The main agenda now needs to be two pronged. One, the political movement towards giving back the power of the state to its people, where it rightly belong, have to continue. The shouts of “Ketuanan Melayu” – which actually means “Ketuanan Pemimpin UMNO” needs to be replaced by “Ketuanan Rakyat”. Article 152 and 153 in no uncertain terms reserved the rights of the Malays and the indigenous people in the country (not the selected few who are UMNO leaders and their side kicks) but at the same time the rights of others cannot be ignored. This is the essence of the Constitution’s articles and this needs to be protected and implemented. It’s the “social contract” that we have all adopted and the social contract that we all have to practice. In short, the “Ketuanan Melayu” have to be replaced by “Ketuanan Rakyat”
The second agenda will have to be pushing economic equality back to where it belongs. The Malaysian Economic Agenda (MEA) now needs to be implemented as soon as possible and wherever possible the wealth of the country have to be given back to its people. Various mechanism and schemes that can achieve this will have to be adopted and implemented immediately. Pakatan Rakyat have no more time to waste, it has to start working in fulfilling the victory with delivering its side of the bargain – Give the wealth of the nation back to the people – and start in areas that it have control, that is in the 5 states.
In working towards achieving the political and economic agenda, the Malaysian Spring which started on March 8, 2008 and celebrated on April 14, 2008 will definitely have its fair share of potential spoilers. The UMNO and Barisan Nasional leaders (past and present) and their cronies will not allow anyone to pry into their goodie jars.
Many efforts, some subtle, others not so subtle will be used. I certainly hope nobody will love their power and influence too much to the extent of taking actions that will be detrimental to the country and its people. I hope nobody starts to entertain the idea of using unconstitutional means to prevent this wave of liberalization and renewed democracy to come to its logical conclusion.
The wisdom of the Prime Minister in respecting the change wanted by the people as shown in their votes should be followed by all. The implementation of these changes however can only be done by a new group of people. People who believe that the country and wealth of the country belongs to its people. Pakatan Rakyat is a better bet than Barisan Nasional.
I hope and I pray your concluding remark – Malaysia’s nascent liberation from the shibboleths of the past may yet end like the Prague spring. The parallels are there. All it needs for the sinister to triumph is for simple citizens to be blase.- will stay where it is , in your blog and not turned into reality. While I believe that there will be parties that would think about it, I hope common sense and decency will prevail.—Din Ahmad

Hi Din,
What you have implied in this write-up is of major concern to me and maybe others who visit your site.
I hope the PR leaders can see through their charade, and, hopefully has some plan in place to neutralise BN’s intentions.

Gan,
It is not just us in PR. Malaysians too must be aware that some politicians are playing the race card for their own ends. If we know what the game is and are not be persuaded by race and other kinds of fear mongering, then there is hope. Don’t buy Utusan Malaysia and other papers which try to play up racial matters.—Din Merican

I just hope not and hope that malaysians will not be taken in by those with such anti-national intention. Hope that they weigh thing carefully and not be penny wise and pound foolish.

Bro Din,
The inevitable is about to be reality. Me, Ah Kow and Maniam will be holding hands without prejudice.
But do you thing Anwar can do it, have he got enough resources? My god! The world is having mega crisis and the hunger will continue… Once again, do you think the chosen one is Anwar? I am not a non-believer but I am just curious.
_______
teman org perak,
Anwar has ideas and programmes (read his MEA), solid government experience as Minister of Finance and DPM, and the right people to get our economy moving forward with sustainable growth (around 8% p.a., allowing for inflation). Honest and very focused government is needed. That will restore trust in government. Stop the bull and get on with the business of good governance.—Din Merican

Well, maybe you are a bit of an alarmist but I wouldn’t completely discount it because those guarding the fort now have too much to lose and too many skeletons in the closet.
Mahathir underestimated Badawi. When he appointed Badawi to replace him he picked him because he thinks Badawi is timid and would be grateful to him and he would be able to control him.He was wrong.Anybody who sat on that seat is the most powerful man in the country and Mahathir should know better.

My two cents worth opinion is that Anwar Ibrahim’s transformation from his days in UMNO to the present day , could be seen on the night of 14.4.2008 at the Sutlan Sulaiman Club . Me thinks UMNO regret the day , they decided to chuck out Anwar from UMNO hoping that he will fade away and be forgotten and driven into oblivion. Sorry guys , Anwar Ibrahim is back and heading all the way !

“Kita perlu kenal pasti sebab-sebab timbul isu keris,” tambanya.

Dear Din,
This is going off on a tangent a little, but just wanted to raise my concerns about the upcoming special meeting between UMNO PAS and PKR mooted by Norza to discuss Malay issues.
Now, I don’t want to be an alarmist myself but on the surface it leaves me, a non-Malay and an ardent supporter of Pakatan very sad to see PAS and PKR agreeing to a meeting, sponsored by UMNO no less, where the agenda is basically ketuanan Melayu all over again.
I’m sure you know this, but I just hope you can convey to the rest of the PKR leadership the deep apprehension of the non-Malays that this meeting will be yet another UMNO type non-Malay bashing session: i.e. that non-Malays are a perpetual threat to the Malays when the truth is that we want is to build a strong and united country together.
I for one was very hopeful for PKR, that it will prove to be the truly Malaysian party that we all have been waiting for that parties like DAP and Gerakan have failed to give us. I just hope this meeting does not prove otherwise.
Thank you and hope you can take my comments into consideration.

Dear Din
As you may have noted in some of my comments in your blog, never take TDM for granted. As I mentioned somewhere before, he is a political Bobby Fischer. Any one who believes he is out to “reform” UMNO & “save” the nation must be aware that this man hardly did anything without an ulterior motive.
Forgive – we can do that. But if the dog keeps barking in the wee hours of the night, then something needs to be done to tell it to shut up.
I say – push TDM to account for his accrimonius 22 years.

Dear Din,
Thank you for giving the prominence for my comments.
I am actually surprised at the wave of criticism against AAB in UMNO itself. Yes, it is all pointing towards the Tunku’s “step-down” strategy. The brain behind it is quiet obvious.
AAB has reached a point of no return as far as his political career is concern – he got to decide and he got to decide now. Take the challenge lying down or fight back. My reading is AAB do not have much choice except to fight back.
UMNO should realize that the results of March 8, 2008 is not entirely of AAB’s doing. The deterioration in the country’s economy, safety and general quality of our life did not happen over a short four years period of mismanagement. The rot started much earlier, mainly due to corruption, cronyism and plutocracy – the privatizations, the negotiated tenders and the misplaced exclusivities and concessions.
For everyone to now point towards AAB as if he is solely responsible is both unfair and barking up the wrong tree. Removing AAB from the Presidency of UMNO and hence as the Prime Minister ( assuming BN still have their majority) is not the solution and in fact will accelerate the demise of UMNO. The rot in UMNO and BN is systemic in nature and requires a full revamp – start at the most rotten part and its not the Presidency.
The only available opportunity for UMNO now is AAB to take a very tough stand to maintain his position and clean the party from within. His main foe now is not PR or Anwar, its TDM and his cronies in UMNO who are pressuring AAB to resign. He knows where their weakest spots are and he cant spare any punches because they are not about to spare any for him.

Din,
I share your concern (and I bet most true Malaysians do) re the rumblings under the surface of the aftermath of the recent elections debacle suffered by the BN. The non-action of the Police despite the public reports of missing official files and in some documented proof (photographs) of shedding of official files in Penang and Selangor is truly reason for the Malaysian Rakyat to worry about the neutrality of force. I am also very disappointed that government servants in the Ministry of Education have publicly chosen to treat Elected state leaders in the PR states with utter disrespect. More than showing their immature response to developments in the country (it is not as if the 5 PR stats are over-run and governed by some alien marauders who have invaded out lovely country to pillage and rape!), these government officers have by their action shown our young impressionable children that it is all right to kick ass of rivals of the Federal Government and snub lawfully elected state governments. Talk about the crab teaching their young to walk straight!
While I am not about to join in the discussion as to the manipulations of various interested parties to take control of the governmentas well as the fact that I do not want to be seen as an alarmist, I concur with your comparison of the present situation bing a dead ringer for the situation after May 13th when our Grand Old man was shoved aside by the ring of conspirators. I must admit that developments these past few weeks gives me a very uncomfortable foreboding that instead of an ‘earthquake’ as forcasted by some, we may be sitting on a volcano which may blow up anytime as the BN fights to retain power and by trying to eliminate the PR. I pray that I am wrong!

Those of you who are keen to help Pakatan Rakyat outflank and outmanouvre TDM and his warlords in their attempt to dislodge Pak Lah and install a Trojan Horse like Najib Mongolia as the next UMNO President and PM should read Robert L Cantrell’s excellent book “Understanding Tsun Tzu on The Art of War”. Pay particular attention to what Tsun Tzu has to say on the enemy’s “bait
and trap deception”, which is precisely what TDM and his forces are practising at the moment.
Cantrell’s book is required reading for the political strategists in Pakatan Rakyat. Forewarned is forearmed!

I share your alarm but I doubt a repeat scenerio will happen. The people in Malaysia today are more educated and better exposed to the world at large.
